My 40 Favorite Free Modern Fonts

by Lindsay Ballard on June 5, 2013 5 Comments

When I started blogging a hundred years ago, I had no idea that I would one day figure out how to make my own graphics, watermarks and titles in Photoshop.  I would have been all, “Shut up!”, if 2013 Lindsay would have run into 2008 Lindsay with the news.

Since then, I’ve developed my own taste in fonts.  Sometimes I go for scrolly and sometimes I go for handwritten, but most of the time I’m really drawn towards the clean, modern fonts for my graphics. My go-to font these days is one called Hype, but others that I’ve just discovered, such as The Copenhagener and Vintage Straps, are quickly making their way up to the top of the list.  Some of these fonts are too thin for things like making signs or using in your Silhouette machine (Did you know you can cut out any font installed on your computer with your Silhouette?), but they are great for online graphics and image watermarks.

Below is a list of 40 of my favorite free modern fonts.  Under the graphic, there’s a link to the website where you can get the free download for each one.

Once you download the font(s) of your choice, you need to actually install them onto your computer.  If you have a PC, my friend Gina at The Shabby Creek Cottage has put together a good tutorial for you. If you have a Mac, check out Beth’s tutorial at Home Stories A to Z.  Both platforms make it easy to install fonts – it will take you longer to actually read the tutorials than it will to get your new fonts installed!

Do you use fonts on your computer other than the pre-installed set that came from the manufacturer?  What’s your all-time favorite font?

Well, I am going to try this, but there are not script fonts on there so…

    2 questions:

1 are there places one can go for more free fonts? How does one find them (can you guess I am mostly computer stupid???)

2 On my old computer was one of my favorite fonts, Vivaldi, but it isn’t on the new computer (and the fonts that are on here are yuck!)…any ideas on how I find this font?

    Thanks so much.

Hi Linda! I can help! 😀

      1. You are not computer stupid! Not at all! I love the site dafont.com, which is where all of the fonts above can be found. If you google “Free Fonts,” more sites will come up. But, I always try to stick with dafont since I know that they can be trusted. I’m sort of weird about downloading things off the internet, since you really never know about viruses and that sort of thing.

      2. Vivaldi is a Microsoft-owned font. You can download it here, but it’s $29: http://www.fonts.com/font/itc/vivaldi I found a few places that offered it for “free,” but I downloaded and tried to install it on my computer and my Mac said it had a “serious error” and “do not use this font.” Again, why I don’t like downloading things! 🙂

The other thing you can do is search on dafont for something that’s similar. Here are all of their calligraphy fonts, so you might find something similar in this (long) list: http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=601

      I hope that helps!

I’m obsessed with fonts and I love finding new ones. Many of the ones you share are new to me and I practically downloaded every single one. Two more you should take a look at since you love modern fonts are Code Light and Arrivals & Departures. Those are two of my favs as well. Thanks! xo Jenna
