I have such a love/hate relationship with wreaths. When they are full and fluffy and make a statement, I love them. When they are wimpy and skinny and just a bunch of “stuff,” I hate them. I am really, really deep, y’all.
I get easily bored with only having a wreath on my front door, so I started to explore some options for hanging them on interior doors, too. There’s no reason why I should only have one awesome wreath in my home at a time. Interior wreaths can be a bit tricky, but I happened to come up with an idea that I think could really work in everyone’s home. I call them “Charmed Wreaths.”
My inspiration for the charmed wreath was to create one that was unexpected and tells a little story about you. This wreath, made from a length of fabric, some strips of ribbon, an unused picture frame and some spray painted dollhouse chairs hints, to my obsessive love of painted furniture.
Just like a traditional charm bracelet carries charms that remind you of important things in your life, a charm wreath displays those types of important things, too. You could add “charms” of pretty much anything you can think of – ballet shoes, heirloom silver cups, old spools of thread – anything small is fair game.
To hang this particular wreath, I looped a length of fabric around the frame like I hang wreaths with ribbon on my front door. I folded it to form a few pleats, and nailed it to the top of my office door with finishing nails. I hot glued the thin black ribbon around the little chairs, and I nailed them to the top of the door, too. After the paint on the chairs dried, the whole thing took me about five minutes to put together. Obviously, you could use a more traditional grapevine wreath, but I thought that a frame would be more fun with these particular colors.
I did stick a few glue dots on the bottom corners of my frame to better attach it to the door. Otherwise, it was banging every time I opened and closed my office door.
I think this is such a fun and easy way to display some {more} personality in my home. My office door is right off of the playroom, so I think it really lends itself to the playfulness I’m trying to bring to that room’s decor.
I think I’d like to add one with Lego on Zack’s door and maybe one with little dolls on Emma’s. Or maybe Hot Wheels and Ponies. Or maybe Star Wars and Minnie Mouse. I could even do a combination of everything they liked. The good thing is that it would take me only a few minutes to change it up.
What do you think about my idea for “charmed wreaths”? What would you put on your wreath?
Sylvia says
At first I thought it a little weird, but by the time I read how you made the wreath, I love it. Very cute and different – in a good way. Kids could pick out stuff they want on the wreath and older ones could even help make it. Yep, definitely moved from a little weird to “now what can I use to make one of these”. You do come up with some very creative ideas!
Lindsay says
HA! I’m glad you changed your mind, Sylvia. 😀 Thanks!

I LOVE IT! But that’s exactly the kind of thing that would make my family look at me with an expression on their faces that silently screams “WHY? WHY? WHY?” LOL!
Lindsay says
You know what’s so funny, Felicia? I’m actually doing a post later this week on the “Why?” question – silent or otherwise. I get it (and the look) ALL the time. 🙂

I’ll be watching for the article!

LOVE the charmed wreath! I saw a set of wood chairs at GW recently, but was stumped for a use. Colored colanders in the kitchen maybe?
Lindsay says
Colored colanders would be so fun! Great idea, Stephanie.

I love any idea that allows you to give your home a very personal unique touch such as this! The idea of an indoor wreath too is really thinking outside the box so extra points for you. I will be giving this a go.

Thanks, Elspeth!

Oh my goodness it’s DARLING! I love the little chairs….chairs are my weakness. I keep buying them (real sized ones, not tiny ones), stacking them in my storage building waiting to be painted or repurposed or loved by me. But your door charm shouts Lindsay with the fabric and the colors. You have flipped on a switch in my brain that I won’t be able to turn off until I make my own version of this great idea! Lisa~
Lindsay says
Yay! Thanks, Lisa!

Count me in the “changed my mind and now I want one” camp. My son would be thrilled with a Lego (on camo ribbon) wreath. Only thing is, I’ll have to buy my own Legos for it-he’ll never part with one.
Lindsay says
Oh, I hear you on that! I feel like we have thousands, and I’m certain he’s mentally cataloged them all.
Christine @ Let's Get Crafty! says
I’m with you Lindsay, I think we should have more awesomeness hanging from doors! I LOVE your little chairs….where did you get them??? Perfect idea especially for my solid (no panels) core doors….soooo boring! 🙂
Can’t wait to find some awesome “charms”!
Lindsay says
Thanks, Christine!

Love the idea of “charmed wreaths”. I must make one using sewing items.

Great idea, Judy!

Your charmed wreath is charming! It’s so original, fun and modern, such a great idea!
I tried something similar after reading your post only I hung one on a large mirror and I love it. I also made one for our front door, and since gluing it to the door wasn’t an option I used Pritt’s muli-tack, no banging when opening the door but no permanent attachment either.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Lindsay says
That’s a great idea, Elvira!

I love it! And furniture is just my thing so I’d probably hang chairs too 🙂
Lindsay says
Ha! We are kindred spirits.

Thank you, Heather!

What a great use for an empty frame! I’ve bought the rejects on clearance at hobby lobby before but never knew what to do with them!
Lindsay says
Well, now you have it – turn them into wreaths!

How did I miss this post? I just saw it on HomeTalk. I can’t tell you how cute it is! I love the idea of using dollhouse furniture. It’s the perfect Anti-Wreath as I call it. Nice work!

Ok completely adorable! Love the little chairs and the fabric! Perfecto!
Amber says
Love! Where did you get the dollhouse chairs?
Georgie says
I must find me some of those chairs! Where on earth did you find them. I’m pretty much obsessed with miniatures. Cute idea.
Alyson says
We have a saying at our house “no empty chairs” this reminded me of that. I will be making this and putting in our dining room.

I had to read this after I saw it on Pinterest, just to find out if you were inspired by the rocking chair factory on Mister Rogers Neighborhood! The little rocking chair looks exactly like the ones on the show. I just introduced my three year old to Mister Rogers, and he loves it! Such a cute idea, and such cute chairs!
