Whenever someone asks me for paint color advice, I always have the same reply: Pick the one that you are immediately drawn to. Paint it on the wall. Live with it for a few weeks. If you don’t love it after those few weeks, then you need to pick another color.
Well, I recently had to take my own advice. I’ve lived with this crazy yellow wall for a few weeks. It was perfect on the swatch. Perfect on the sample that I painted. But on the whole wall? Negatory. It was blinding.
So, I picked a few more yellows to try out. I lived with those samples for a few days. I hated them, too. Yellow was out.
I knew that when I painted the wall bright yellow, I was taking a risk. And risks in decorating are risks worth taking – even if it doesn’t work out in the end.
I yet again grabbed my HomeRight EZ Twist Paint Stick (Amazon affiliate link) and yet another can containing a risky color of paint. It took me an afternoon of rolling, but I immediately knew that this had risk paid off.
The thought of repainting a wall – or a room – seems like a daunting task. But, I binge watched (listened to?) a Real Housewives marathon on Bravo and got to work. I’m telling you – that Paint Stick makes painting and cleaning up really easy. In fact, I even got a paint roller cleaning kit to use this time. It honestly cleans up just as easily as the dude in this video makes it look, y’all.
Risk taking is going to look different for everyone. For some, it may be a piece of furniture painted in a color other than white or black. For others, it may be mixing sheet patterns on their bed. Along those lines, the green wall may be too risky for you. But, it’s just perfect for me.
What kind of risks do you want to take in your home? I want to know – and to give you a chance to take a risk with your own EZ Twist Paint Stick! Just leave me a comment below telling about a risk you want to take in your decorating and fill out the Rafflecopter form. I can’t wait to hear what you want to do!
Good luck!

We’re taking a risk by installing new hardwoods instead of having the old ones refinished (risky because we’re doing it ourselves!).

I really, REALLY want to do a planked statement wall in my grandkids’ bedroom. Just need to 1) get over the fear that I won’t like it when it’s finished and 2) roll up my sleeves and just do it!
Thanks so much for the opportunity — my fingers are crossed!!!
Karen says
I’d really like to make over my husband’s and my dressers so that they match. He has real oak. I have cheap faux wood. I’d like to paint them both and get matching hardware. Unfortunately, my husband is vehemently opposed to me covering the wood color. Maybe someday I’ll convince him!
tammigirl says
I just bought lavender paint for my laundry room. It’s the one room in the house that’s all mine, and I want to girl it up a bit.
Our whole house is still the flat cream color the builder used. I actually like it, but I do not love it flat. I have to constantly touch up or live with smudges. Three floors of touch up paint constantly has turned into living with smudges longer than I care to admit.
I also want to paint the doors inside and out.
I have a lot of plans with paint – chalkboard paint, special front door paint from Modern Masters, metallic paint from Modern Masters for the trim in my laundry room, and a few other things.
Beth says
I paint all the time, so painting isn’t really a risk (the hubby swears our house is shrinking from the layers of paint – gotta love him!). But I’ve never liked our front door. It was white, then matte evergreen, now a matte slate blue – it was supposed to be grey/almost black, but the color the painters used went all wonky. Now I have a red brick house with – instead of white siding – a blue grey that was supposed to be grey, with slate grey door/shutters instead of dark grey/black. I’m going to risk painting the door again, then maybe I’ll get around to fixing not only the color mistake on the rest of the house, but also fixing the ‘not quite professional/really bad’ paint job the painters did 2 years ago.
I just need to find a paint color that will anchor the red brick!
Kathie says
I plan to paint my kitchen an granny smith apple green. I think I’ve found the right paint color. Now to paint!
Renee says
I am painting my kitchen cabinets. There is nothing wrong with the cabinets so the thought of painting them and messing them up is terrifying but I am going to do it! I am also going to change out my accessories in my living room this fall – my walls are liliac gray (more liliac than gray) and I want to go with navy as my accent color. I know that mixture is probably not for everyone but if I love it then it is worth it!
Marcy says
I’m currently staining my hubby-made footboard and headboard bright aqua. It’s been scary, but the more I live with it, the more I love it!
Rachel T says
I have a wall that I tried to paint with fun polka dots. It looks like a clown threw up. So now I want to paint some sort of Mary Blaire/Makely-inspired mural on that wall instead!

Boy do I need to paint! I need this very much!!
Patti B says
I love to paint! The only room in my house that’s still white is my game room and we don’t use it because it’s so boring! I’d love to figure out a color for it to make it more inviting but it’s a difficult room to paint so something to make it easier would be awesome!
Desaree Martin says
I want to paint my kitchen cabinets but I am oh so scared that I will ruin those perfectly good cabinets.

Laurie says
I am going to paint our kitchen cabinets myself. Risky for me.
Donetta Wolfe says
I just finished talking my husband into painting our outside window trim black. I love it, and he actually does also. I am so glad I went for it. I also just finished painting our bedroom or should say repainting our bedroom. I bought a green and lived with it for a year, hating it. I love the brighter green that I just repainted it.
Erica says
The risk definitely paid off! The wall looks great. And paint is the easiest thing to take a risk with, if you don’t like it, paint over it. I risked my bathroom once, and hated it! One weekend later, I was able to transform it again.
Candice says
I want to refinish all my oak hardwood furniture and paint them either white, black, or turquoise to go with the current color scheme in my living room and kitchen. I have never refinished furniture so it’s a risk for me to sand all that beautiful oak and cover it with paint.
Carla says
I painted a dresser neon green and orange with a neon plaid fabric on the drawers, it was a risk for sure, but I love the way it turned out!
Betty B. says
I want to add chevron stripes in my room!
Jenna says
My risk would be finally trying to paint ANY room in my house…
Amanda McKee says
I’ve taken several risks recently; changed our formal dining room to a sitting room, hung a giant clock on our front porch, painted our front door bright green(from slate blue which matched our bricks), and painted a bathroom cabinet dark grey(from white). Up next, I want to tackle changing up our kitchen counters, cabinets, and painting the bedrooms better colors.
Julika says
I am in the midst of repainting everything in the house – getting rid of all beige. GAH what a job. This weekend it’s the laundry room (lime green). Next up – the office (lemon yellow.)
Lori says
That green is AMAZING.
I have to say, paint is one of my favorite ways to take a risk because even though it is a pain to repaint, I can do it myself and it doesn’t cost that much. This is how I ended up with a hot pink accent wall in my kitchen and bright aqua above the chair rail in my dining room. People thought I was crazy, but I loved the colors. Several years later, those colors still make me happy when I walk into the rooms. However, the light grayish purple in the living room just did not work out. So, I grabbed 2 cans of paint (and my mom and aunt) and tried again with a light tan. (I did test a few large-scale swatches before picking the right shade.) It’s perfect.
And don’t get me started on the many, many cans of spray paint in my house that have been used to refinish thrift store treasures!
Angela Weber says
I plan on using my dad’s electric tool (I have no idea what it’s called) and digging out all the nasty grout that the previous homeowner put in. Both my bathrooms look like a 3 year old did the grouting. Large gaps and nasty white/yellow color because they didn’t seal it. So it’s coming out and Dark Grey is going in. A little nervous about this, but it’s better than replacing the whole floor.
Linda says
I’ve been working on creating a floor mirror. It has been in my mind for a year and I finally got it put together. I’ve got the undercoat paint color on and today after work I’m going to dry-brush the final color. I’ve never dry-brushed before and it scares me to death that I’ll ruin the whole project. But THAT is the risk I’m taking!
Jessica says
I would love to paint our guest room a dark color, but I’ve been afraid the room itself is too dark. One way or another all our builder beige is getting covered!
Monica G. says
I’m dying to paint my cabinets and change my backsplash.
Jennifer says
I suppose the colors my husband and I choose seem like a risk to everyone else, but so far we are in love with the bold jewel tones. I wish I could upload a color-correct picture of our living room to show!
KAte Suhoza says
Well I have to go with the living room because I AM SO BORED WITH IT. But my triplets room needs a refresh!
Kelly says
I LOVE that green! Great risk!
I painted our front door inside and out lime green. I wasn’t sure that I loved it, but now I’m so glad I took that risk!
We (meaning my husband) just finished installing hardwood in our kitchen. I’ve painted the kitchen cabinets a light gray, painted a wall dark gray, and painted another wall orange. Now all that’s left is the white subway tile backsplash and to recover the kitchen chairs.
I really want to do navy blue stripes in our foyer area as well as paint every other tread on the stairs the same navy blue. I love being able to make our house a fun and inviting place to be!
Lolly says
I’m going to install horizontal wide plank tongue and groove panels on my kitchen peninsula and across the room up the fire place/chimney breast and paint it navy blue. I can’t stand all of those scuff marks my kids leave on the peninsula, and I’m trying to hide an absolutely hideous and unnecessary niche on my fireplace.
Robyn S. says
Paint my laundry room orange!
Lisa Cooper says
My husband and I just finished our dare…we built a house!!!!
Ginger says
We just added a sunroom to the back of our house. It was a huge risk! We are almost done, and I think it’s going to be worth it! 😉
Christa says
I’d love to paint my foyer a deep blue/gray. It’s so open, I think a dark color could work in there.
Beth McHale says
Decided about a month ago to repaint every room on our 1st floor. 3 down, 3 to go! This paint stick would be a HUGE help. Especially because I’ve already changed my mind about the color in one of the rooms. ps. I love your blog!
Tami Dymock says
We purchased a home last August and intend to paint our living/dining/kitchen. It is all open and I want a separate color on the wall nearest the Kitchen and on the wall near the living room. I am hoping my midnight blue and the red i want to do will compliment and not look horrible. I had never heard of the Twist paint stick until now. Thanks for the chance.
Amanda Gigray says
I’m taking risks all the time with paint! I LOVE color!! I painted my kitchen yellow & the first color I selected was a little too bright, but now I think I’ve found a softer yellow that is working perfectly. Next is to paint the outside of my house green with a bold purple front door! 🙂

Kate says
I’m a renter, but I’d love to take more risks with pattern in my bedroom accessories!
Leah Adams says
I want to paint my kitchen! I’m a brand new home owner, and have never painted anything!
Laurie says
I have this thin-ish wall space that just about faces the front door but absolutely faces the dining room and front window. Anything I put there tends to stand out. I got it into my head that it would be cool to have one of those art noveau posters covering nearly the entire wall space (3.5′ x 7′). I would either want it painted right on the wall (or some kind of decal) or I would frame a poster. It could really fail or it could really look cool. I’m just figuring out how to try to make it happen.
MaryLea says
I painted our powder room bright yellow two weeks ago. It’s the wrong yellow. I still want to go with a bold color but am thinking it will be a blue or green this time. Going to visit the paint store and see which color jumps out at me! Love your bright green!
Shannon says
Paint my vanities….scary!
Bri D. says
I want to paint stripes on one of my kitchen walls!
Sara says
We’re renting our current home so not a whole lot of risk taking going on there. But, we’ll be moving in November and I cannot wait to get my hands on some paint! I’ve not been able to take the plunge anywhere else we’ve lived and I want to design a beautiful nursery for our first little one due in July 🙂
Amanda says
I already took the risk, just a few days ago actually and am not sure about it just yet. But we recently moved and the new fireplace was a horrible orange red brick with a honey oak mantel. I ended up white washing the brick and staining the mantel a deep rich brown. Now I’m trying to decide on wall colors that will compliment it.
Amy says
I’d love to do a striped wall but my husband doesn’t agree.

I’m wanting to pull up the carpet in my living room and adjoining dining room and stain the subfloor to resemble hardwood floors before we renovate in a couple of years. Terrified it won’t look right and trying to figure out how to accommodate the lower subfloor matching up to the existing hardwoods.
Jen says
I totally just took the risk of painting my family room teal…and I don’t think I love it. But I’m happy I did something to change it up in there. Next risk? Tearing out the kitchen ceiling to bump it up. I’m terrified. It’s gonna be awesome.

We just bought a home built in 1970 with no updates. I’m trying to add color and fun to a whole house! I just painted my kitchen bright Apple green and my living room coral. My next big risk is to paint stripes in my bathroom. Then the huge task of painting all of our wood paneling!

S. Lewis says
I am planning to paint a metallic(glaze?)topcoat on the walls in my north facing gets no light master bedroom. It is called pearl and the walls are already a warm white. My hope is it will help the room’s only window brighten the room. It’s that or mirrored furniture (and paint is definitely cheaper).
laura says
We’re taking risks by treating the home like it’s OURS, and not the next person who will buy it. For me that includes some crazy moves like changing a bedroom into a mudroom, and cutting holes into the floor of a closet or a wall. I want to use this house to it’s max potential, and taking risks is just part of that picture.
Karen Greer says
My risk would be stenciling a pattern on the wall behind our piano.

Stenciling the bedroom ceiling! It’s going to be quite a bit of work since what I want will require me to fully paint a new coat on the ceiling first, then do a stencil pattern. If I hate it, my neck won’t be thanking me any time soon. But! If I love it, it’s gonna be gorgeous!
Heidi says
I’ve had 2 new cans of paint and a test swatch on my wall for over 6 months – boy, do I need this to finally start and finish the job!
Samantha says
Those color choices sound so risky on paper but they look so wonderful and striking in real life….great job. I’ve had risky paint jobs work and not work before….I love teal so I panted the island and pantry door in my kitchen teal and it turned out gorgeous but I also tried to paint my entrance wall a bold pineapple yellow….it did not work at all but was easy to paint over that’s the fun thing with paint, you can just go over it if you don’t like it. As for other risky things I want to do….I’d love to replace the kids carpet with laminate flooring but do it all myself….just working up my courage.
Brooke says
Rip down walls on either side of my fireplace and build built-ins instead!
