Back in March, my world was totally changed when my only favorite sister moved here from Orlando. It had been been 19 years since I had lived within a two day driving distance from anyone in my family, and now my sister is about 30 minutes away from me door-to-door. To say that this is one of the best things that has ever happened to me would be an understatement. My kids are thrilled that “Aunt Leigh Leigh” can just stop by for dinner any time, and I am thrilled that we are able to spend so much time together after 19 years of trying to catch up over quick weekend visits.
Like many people, Leigh Ann has gone gaga for Pinterest and has found some adorable projects that she wants to recreate. The thing is, though, that Leigh and I couldn’t be more opposite in our personalities. She’s the numbers girl and I’m the creative one, so she was nervous to even attempt these projects. So, we’ve had a Sister Craft Day where I’ve helped her put together the projects that she had in mind, and I have tried to teach her some things about crafting. She’s now making cute little canvas signs for herself and her friends.
But, Leigh has never painted anything before. So when she found a $40 headboard on Craigslist that she wanted me to paint, I said, “How about I teach you how to do it?” She wasn’t thrilled (to be totally honest), but she agreed. I had just gotten a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP paint sprayer in the mail, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to use it. This isn’t the type of sprayer that you’d use for huge areas, like walls, but it’s perfect for things like furniture and cabinets.
I set up plastic sheeting in my garage and got her headboard prepped for painting (using a deglosser to remove the shiny factory finish instead of sanding it). Don’t you wish you had a big sister to do all of your prep work? Ha! Then, to try out the sprayer myself, I used it to apply a primer coat (Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3).
I have a few other paint sprayers myself, and the Fine Finish Max felt different to me than the other ones. It was much lighter weight to hold in my hand so my hands didn’t get fatigued. I did have a hard time using it the first time because you are supposed to hold it 6″-12″ away from the item you are painting – much closer than my other paint sprayers. But, once I got the hang of that, it was really easy.
After the primer dried, it was Leigh Ann’s turn. I gave her a quick set of instructions (basically just overlap the strokes by about 1/3 and use your legs to move up and down instead of your bending your wrists), and I turned her loose. Since she is not a DIYer, I had no idea how it was going to go.
As it turns out, Leigh Ann was a beast with that paint sprayer!
She just worked from one side of the headboard to the other, making sure that she was overlapping strokes and keeping the sprayer steady.
When she was finished, she remarked how easy it was to use and that there were no drips at all. The fact that someone who had never painted anything was able to use it straight out of the box with about 30 seconds of instruction has me sold. Clean up was a breeze and the paint sprayer used much less paint than any of my other sprayers. MUCH less paint.
Her headboard hasn’t made it back to her house yet, because I’m the one with the truck. A big sister who is a DIYer AND drives a truck? Leigh Ann is lucky, isn’t she? Ha!
If you are looking for your first paint sprayer to use on furniture pieces, this is the one to get. You can get it on Amazon for $70 and free Prime shipping (affiliate link).
Or, how about just winning one? Leave a comment below to be entered to win a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer! This sweepstakes will be open through 8/6/2014 and is open to US residents, ages 18 and up. Good luck! (Edited on 8/7/14 to add that this giveaway is now closed.)

Lindsay! So great! Saw the set up in your garage the other day and it’s fun to see what you were doing! Looks awesome!
I love the coral colored headboard! I do a lot of repurposing projects and the HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer would definitely help me out!
What a great job she did. Love the color!
I would love to win this paint sprayer! I’ve tried 3 different kinds of sprayers and none of them work great – especially the first time I pull it out. I usually spend about 2-3 hours trying to get it to work! This sprayer looks amazing!
I LOVE how that headboard turned out! Such a great job!
okay I could so use this, sign me up please. That turned out amazing
Great Job Leigh! and great CL find! I am now determined I will find Elise a bed on CL too!!
Yay!! I would absolutely love to do my painting with a sprayer. Cross my little fingers!!!
I love that red!! My favorite color. I was just thinking about buying a paint sprayer. I want to paint my 15 yo entertainment center and freshen it up.But it is huge and I don’t want to do it by hand!
I love the bed color you chose and man, could I ever use a sprayer.
I would love to win this paint sprayer!!! I have several projects lined up that would be so much easier with one but I am having to wait until I can save up the money. Love your blog!
My husband and I are going to try and diy our kitchen cabinets. Wish us luck! I’m thinking a sprayer would totally help 🙂
Pick me! Pick me! I could really use a paint sprayer for my upcoming kitchen cabinet makeover project!!!
Oh, and love that pink color. Oh, and how lucky for you to have your sister so close! Mine is thousands of miles away. Boo hoo …
🙂 Linda
I never used a sprayer and you made it sound so easy. I have a old ugly china hutch that my mother gave me and I hate to get rid of it. I want to give it a fresh new look in burgundy but felt brushing/rolling the paint on will give it a weird textured look. Spraying will give it a nice smooth finish. Great giveaway. Thanks
I love the color that she used. It makes that somewhat traditional head board look very modern and updated. I would also love to have that paint sprayer because my headboard is in much need of an update like that!
Thanks for the recommendation! We’re painting my daughter’s loft bed, and I’m hesitating because of all the brushing involved!! Might be time to try a paint sprayer!!
Would love to win this sprayer!! I have a headboard and footboard sitting in my garage waiting to be painted. Scared to paint it because of drips. I haven’t ever used a sprayer but this one looks easy enough. Now to find someone to prep it for me haha!
We would love to win- we have a lot of pAinting in our future. Thanks
I would LOVE to win a paint sprayer. I drool over them everytime I am at Menards. My father-in-law was a painter by trade and my hubby used to work for him in the summers, and insists that there is a trick to using them – implying that it isn’t for me. I would LOVE to prove him wrong!! LOL
I would love a paint sprayer! We just bought our first house and its filled with hand me down furniture that I need to paint! I also have a one year old, so time is of the essence 🙂
Love the color she picked. Do we get to see it in a finished room later?
Seems like a really cool tool. Wonder how it would work on some chairs I want to paint. They have a criss cross pattern so a pain to paint by hand.
I SOOOO Want a Sprayer! This looks like a great one to start with! I hope I win!!
This paint sprayer would be good for so many projects, and it looks rather compact so finding storage for it would be rather easy. And, I think my son would be excited to help me on a project if it involved something cool like this!
This looks so cool!
Oh My Gosh!!! In January I broke both my wrists. Yeah, my granddaughter and I were having a date at the Roller rink. Guess who fell? Anyway, since ‘healing’ I haven’t been able to use my paint sprayer as it is so heavy. This would be wonderful for me as I have unfinished projects that I can’t get to. Using a brush now is difficult as well, and I don’t always like the way a brush piece looks. This would be awesome to try! I’m especially excited because your sister didn’t have a problem with it. That kind of information helps!
Oh wow! I have several projects that a paint sprayer would make simpler. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
My armoire has been waiting for a new coat of paint for a couple of years and gives me the evil eye every time I walk by because it has been so neglected. Problem is, I’ve never painted anything quite so large and quite honestly, have been so reluctant to attempt painting it for fear that it I’ll make a total mess of it. After seeing Leigh Ann’s success and her gorgeous headboard, a paint sprayer would give me a much needed push to get the job done!
I love my HomeRight steam cleaner and would love to add this to my arsenal~!
Congratulations Leigh Ann on your first paint project. It looks great. Lindsay, I know you have to be thrilled that your sister is so close. Enjoy!
I could really, really use a sprayer…I am a regular shopper at our local ReStore and needless to say, my projects would go MUCH faster with a nice little paint sprayer like this. Thanks SO much for the giveaway!!
Looks very easy to use. I might not screw it up – and I have several projects in the pipeline.
Oh I could so use this! Just bought a place and it seems everything needs to be painted! I am not the best with a brush and roller! lol
wow – that looks awesome!
That headboard turned out gorgeous!! Thanks for an awesome giveaway Lindsay!
xo, Tanya
Wow this is so awesome! I love it and thank you the tutorial.
great job! A paint sprayer has been on every bday and christmas list for the last five years!!!
Would love to win one!
This project just changed my mind on a paint sprayer. I’ve always been intimidated by them, opting to hand paint or use canned spray paint. But the headboard looks amazing and it seems relatively easy to use! My kids better beware…nothing will be off limits if I win this! If it isn’t moving, it just might get a coat of paint!
I have been dying to own a paint sprayer. what a great giveway!
Oops, I think my comment didn’t post so I’ll try again. I need a paint sprayer!
Holy Cow! This sprayer looks awesome, and fun even! We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen, and two of our bathrooms. I could have a lot of fun with this!!!!
I love the paint job but especially the color.
Just purchased a headboard to repaint for my daughter,, along with nitestand and chest of drawers.. This would save me SOOOO much time,, especially on the clean up according to the rave reviews.
I would love a new paint sprayer!
That looks awesome! I’ve been wanting to get a sprayer, but have been nervous. This makes it look easy enough I could tackle some great projects!
Honestly, this is great news. I’ve wanted a paint sprayer for ages and the thought that it uses less paint and has easy clean up means a lot to me. Thank you.
Love your site and the headboard…
Your sister did a great job. Makes me less nervous about painting furniture. Would love to win the Homeright sprayer. Thanks for the giveaway.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to win one!
Great job on the headboard! You’ve inspired me to paint my son’s now. 🙂
I have never used a paint sprayer, either! Would love to give one a try!!
Hi Lindsay, I love your website and have done several of your projects. I have been debating wether or not to get a paint sprayer but have not wanted to make the commitment. We are building our house this summer and I am building several pieces of furniture as well as the cabinets and walk in closets. A sprayer would make the furniture look professional and I would not have to obsess of brush streaks! I coach Odyssey of the Mind at my kids school and involve my daughters in all of my making activities. Thanks for showing women and girls can do anything they set out to accomplish!
Thanks,
Lorrie
I don’t think my comment posted earlier- I can’t see it anyway so sorry if this is a duplicate, but I really want a chance at winning a sprayer. I have so many things I’d like to paint with it. Thanks for the chance.
I’d really love to try one of these out. We have about 434389049 projects going on at once here. I think it would help bring that number down faster.
I am so over my pine bedroom furniture! This sprayer is just what I need to help me tackle a project that I have been putting off!
Oh my gosh. I hand painted a very similar bed and nightstand. It was a nightmare!!! I said I would never do that again!! But if I had this sprayer…may be a different story! 😉
I would love to win this!
AHHHH! I am painting all of the interior doors and kitchen cabinets in my house. I would LOVE a sprayer!
This is a great example! I would love to win one of these for my son. He does spray paint art and has a lot of talent but we are not able to afford to get him anything. My husband and I are both disabled and as such we are not likely to ever be able to buy him one. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the sweepstakes.
I have a myraid of pieces I want to paint but I am so scared of paint sprayers! This could be just the ticket!
I just picked up two antique twin beds to go in to my granddaughter’s new “big girl room”. I’m thinking this would sure make painting them a whole lot easier! Thanks for the opportunity — my fingers are crossed!
I’ve always wanted a paint sprayer!
That’s so awesome! I could really use one of these sprayers.
This paint sprayer would make my life SO much easier for the projects I build for my booth “Rescued & Restored”
Thanks for the opportunity and you a great sister! 😉
Oh, I’d love to win! I would LOVE a paint sprayer!
Love the headboard, and love how the blue walls sets it off!!! I’m so ready making my painting projects easier…and that sprayer would fit the bill!
Fingers and toes are crossed!!! I have a lot of in law furniture that is in need of a makeover. This sprayer would just be what the doctor ordered!!
What a great giveaway! I have been contemplating purchasing a sprayer for months now!
I love the paint booth setup! My winter project is removing and painting all my interior doors! I’m thinking spraying is the way to go! Thanks for the information!
I would love to win a sprayer – I work part-time and love to do DIY projects and most involve spray painting to repurpose! This would make things a lot easier! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, I’m in the market for a paint sprayer right now! We are moving soon, and I’ll actually have a garage to work out of instead of our deck. I had just told my husband that one of my first purchases is going to be a paint sprayer. Your post is timely, I’ve been looking at paint sprayers online, but have been hesitant to buy one, since I don’t know anyone who owns one. Thanks!!
I really want one! So many projects I have …. 🙂
I am terrible about starting projects and not finishing them and I NEED this sprayer to kickstart me!!
OOOO I have wondered about that one! Thanks for the review.
A sprayer a novice can use…perfect for me! I don’t have is a paint sprayer and wanting one to do my kitchen cabinets! Your sister did a great job…as did the teacher!
Uh, I’m going to need to know what that color is! And good job on finding a cute headboard!!
Would love to win this. Have many projects I could use this on. Beautiful job!!
I have NEVER used a paint sprayer before because first, my husband won’t let me touch his and second, his sprayer seemed so heavy! After reading this blog on how easy and light the HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer is to use, I would love to win one. Have had the same furniture for over 30 years and just know that painting some of it would give it new life and save me money also. I am retired so this would be a good thing!
Thank you for giving your readers this opportunity.
Hi. Cool project. I love how it turned out. I have been debating about getting a paint sprayer for some time now. I get tired of hand / roller painting furniture. Do the sprayers require you to add any water to the paint? And how do you clean them?
So inspiring! As a fellow newbie that wants to try painting but quietly fears making a muck of it all… I’m ready to try it out!
Thanks for the post and the chance.
Love the headboard! I need to win this sprayer because I have a ton of craigslist project stacked up, waiting painting!
I love the color of the updated headboard. I would love a sprayer for all of my projects!

Love the color, the headboard looks great. Would love to get painting with a sprayer in my house, what a time saver.
That looks awesome!!
Wow! I have been interested in finding a painter sprayer but know nothing about them. This one looks great!
I’ve always wanted to try a spray paint machine, but they scare me too! I can just see myself spraying everything in sight though, because it looks so much easier than a spray can or a brush!
What a beautiful head board, I love the color!
Would love to win this! I’m in the beginning stages of painting our garage/shutters/door and this would be perfect!
The headboard looks great and loved seeing the LA cameo! 🙂 Pick me!! Pretty please?

Excellent job, looks great! I would LOVE a sprayer as I have so many spray jobs that I would love to do. Cute hairband too by the way!
Awesome! Would love to win to try one out! 🙂
Everything about this project just looked so awesome! I’ve been painting (what seems like) everything in my house with a brush and get so frustrated with the brush marks. It would be so sweet to win this, but in the likely event that I don’t I might just have to invest in one of these, just for those pieces that have eluded me so far! Thanks for the post and thanks for the opportunity to win one!
Looks awesome!
Have always wanted a paint sprayer! So cool.
You make it look so easy!
This is just what I need – fingers are crossed that I win!!

Would love this! Looking to start a furniture make over business and this would come in handy.
I’ve never tried a sprayer but would LOVE to…. it looks too easy.
Oh a sprayer would be awesome! I just finished hand painting board and batten and cabinetry. I can do it but a sprayer would be so much quicker.
If Leigh Ann can do it that easily, I think even I might be able to use it!
I would love to win this paint sprayer! My husband is a painter by trade and his big paint sprayer intimidates me. Having a small paint sprayer for my many projects would be great! My fingers are crossed!
Thanks for showing how easy it is. I have always been nervous of the sprayer. Always used the paint brush.
Wow! I love the red paint!
Thanks for sharing the tips- I’ve never used a paint sprayer before so those were great things to know!

I have one I am afraid to use, would sell it and use this one. You made it sound possible!
This would be a very dangerous tool for me to own. Oh the possibilities I could paint. Muhhhhahahhaha!
I love adding color! Don’t get me wrong, wood is nice, but for a pop of color, I would trade.
Would love to get this sprayer. Crafting is not in my blood but that hasn’t slowed me down yet.
I love the color! And that’s exactly the type of easy paint sprayer I need.
Awesome. We have a Wagner Power Painter and it is a bear to clean. I would love to win this.
What a nice even finish that sprayer leaves. The headboard looks great!
I’ve tempted to try a sprayer for a while. This would be a good excuse to re-paint my chipping dresser. Love the headboard color!
I’m terrified to use a sprayer but I have a million things that would look awesome.
I am an aspiring DIY who is afraid of paint. I need this. 🙂
I’d love to with this paint sprayer! I’ve been thinking about purchasing one because I have dreams of repainting my cabinets and I’d love to be able to do it quicker than with a paintbrush.
Oh I would LOVE this!!!
I’ve been wanting a sprayer for about a year but I get overwhelmed while looking at them and walk away. Your info has made my decision easier!
Love that beautiful finish!
The sisters make a dynamite duo! I need my cabinets painted!
Oh, how I want to try this out on all the projects in my garage!!
Makes it look easy!
I cannot wait to try this! I have wanted a paint sprayer for a long time, but was afraid it would be too much. How was the clean up of the sprayer itself? Love the headboard! Thanks for sharing!
Loved the article I hope I win
I would love to have a paint sprayer. I love all the Home Right products you use. Thank you~
Oh I would love to have one of these! I have a sad old dining table just waiting for the weather to cool off so I can paint it. This sprayer would make the job so much easier!
Oh, I would love to win that sprayer! Once it is warm enough in the spring, I start spray painting everything I have saved all winter! But I have only used the cans. I have a large metal filing cabinet I have been wanting to tackle, but I don’t think the spray cans are the way to go…this sprayer is the answer!…and I love your blog/emails.i love seeing what creative people do.
Oh man, now here’s a DIY tool I’d use the heck out of! I have about a billion “I’ll paint these someday when I get around to it” projects lying around the house…this would really help me tackle them 🙂
My wife and I are expecting a baby In January 2015. Recently we were given the opportunity to either get rid of or find a place for her younger sister (now 24) Bedroom suit she had as a child. It is white with out of date hardware as well as little flower painted on the front of the drawers and a few places where stickers had once been placed.
We were already loading it into my truck before her parents got done with what they were saying. We are planning on getting a crib but thought we could refinish the chest of draws, wardrobe, and side table and be able to use them for the baby and years to come.
Well i have been given the task to refinish, paint and change hardware….not a hard task. I don’t plan on using a brush because of how it turns out sometimes. I plan on getting a sprayer to make the job easier and have a better coverage. This sprayer would be awesome to buy if not win.
Thanks Lindsay! You’re my go-to paint guru when/if I have any painting questions. If I don’t win, I’m definitely buying one! Love the color of the headboard! That’s another thing, you’ve taken the fear out of infusing COLOR in my home, THANKS!!!
Love the color!! Looks easy enough.. Ive been wanting a sprayer.. Ive got a vintage tv cabinet that I’m itching to get out of the garage storage and into the house to admire and love. eeekk!!! I want to win this sprayer!

Beautiful. Love the color and I love the sprayer!
Wow-I have been scared to death of paint sprayers since painting the carpet a gorgeous shade of blue to match my walls last summer. This might (MIGHT) make me try again.
I sooooo need one of these for my craft business!!!
I love the color of that headboard! I’m about to start painting all of my kitchen cabinets. I’m definitely opting for the spray route! 🙂
Those colors are lovely together! Crossing my fingers and hoping to win – we have so many nursery ideas planned!
I would LOVE to win the paint sprayer!!! Thank you for the opportunity!
btw… I love your blog! 🙂
I would love the opportunity to updated my 1960’s kitchen cabinets. This sprayer would make the process so much simpler.
I have shopped for sprayers for over a year. Researched them and finally decided that I would be unhappy with pretty much any of them. They just didn’t have any good customer reviews for the D.I.Yer. This looks like a sprayer that I can handle. Smaller, hopefully equals lighter too! If I don’t win, I will seriously consider buying!
Wow do I need one of these myself!! Love the headboard it looks awesome and so smooth.
Wow! Sounds like you’re both lucky!
Wish my siblings were supportive, present AND capable. Those that are generous, don’t have the means or experience; those who can, are grouches (and often sneering). Oh well! “The poor will always be with us” seems to include the poor in spirit, too. Not gonna keep this crafter down, especially if gifting my DIY may convert those hard-hearted folks.
THANKS for the step-by-step review and giveaway.
Wow, looks like an awesome sprayer for a DIY junkie. Can’t wait to get my hands on one! So many projects I could use it for. My bedroom dressers and end table as well as my daughter’s. I think I’d even use a fun color for hers if it’s this easy so later I can easily change it. Exciting! Thanks for the post.
Me me me! I just moved from round rock to McKinney, and I’m gonna be doing a lot of painting!
Wow! I have been looking for a light weight sprayer. As a senior citizen, I need that for all my antique make-overs. I have 5 booths in 2 antique malls so I do a lot of repurposing!
I’m just starting a business and would love to win one of these! It would be so useful!
I’ve been looking for a new paint sprayer for smaller projects! Nice price. Nice review!
I would love to win the sprayer! Thanks for the chance!
We’re totally gutting our house ourselves, so I’d love to have a sprayer to use on the trim, and furniture when we get to that point.
Wow, I have been thinking about getting a sprayer to tackle some furniture projects. Last time I brushed all 5 pieces because I was nervous about using a sprayer. Thanks so much for the recommendation, you make it look so easy!

Looks super easy!
This is so awesome! I have been a little apprehensive about trying a sprayer. Actually scared to death if truth be told. I thought the sprayer would make the paint run. I also thought the sprayer would get clogged, and of course create a great big mess. How awesome would it be to be able to paint like this! Please enter me into the drawing. I am on board with the HomeRight Finish Max Line Finish HVLP Sprayer!
This looks like just what I need to complete a few projects around the house. I’ve been intimidated with paint sprayers in the past, but this looks easy. I would love to win one!

Pick me! Pick me!
I really, really (did I say “really”?) need this sprayer. It is the one basic tool I am missing for all my DIY projects. Up until now, I’ve had to use a roller, a brush (foam and/or bristles) or a spray can on my projects… not always with good results. And I have also painted a bed red, but it is nowhere a BEAUTIFUL AND SMOOTH as this one.
You are ONE wonderful sister! 😀
Love the headboard.. thanks for sharing and the chance to win.
A good sprayer pays for itself in no time. Why pay the expense of a professional to repaint an item or even throw it away. For the cost of this sprayer it will pay for itself off in no time.
This sprayer looks super easy to use. I’d love one!
These are awesome sprayers…would love love to have one!

I am planning on painting my 80’s oak cabinets. Would love the chance to win the sprayer to make my job easier! Love all your tips.
Awesome! I’m a spray paint junkie – if it can be sprayed, I always default to that since the finish and speed of application is so much better than brushes or rollers. It’d be awesome to be able to use any color paint, though, and not be limited to the store’s selection of canned spray paint!
I too, am an older diy sister to a younger non diy sister. I love it. I have used many other sprayers &
Have a problem with the far distance I need to stand from my piece. I am visually impaired so this sprayer sounds perfect for me. Thanks for sharing!
