A Paint Sprayer That Even a Non-DIYer Can Use {and a Giveaway}

by Lindsay Ballard on July 30, 2014

Back in March, my world was totally changed when my only favorite sister moved here from Orlando. It had been been 19 years since I had lived within a two day driving distance from anyone in my family, and now my sister is about 30 minutes away from me door-to-door.  To say that this is one of the best things that has ever happened to me would be an understatement.  My kids are thrilled that “Aunt Leigh Leigh” can just stop by for dinner any time, and I am thrilled that we are able to spend so much time together after 19 years of trying to catch up over quick weekend visits.

Like many people, Leigh Ann has gone gaga for Pinterest and has found some adorable projects that she wants to recreate.  The thing is, though, that Leigh and I couldn’t be more opposite in our personalities.  She’s the numbers girl and I’m the creative one, so she was nervous to even attempt these projects.  So, we’ve had a Sister Craft Day where I’ve helped her put together the projects that she had in mind, and I have tried to teach her some things about crafting.  She’s now making cute little canvas signs for herself and her friends.

But, Leigh has never painted anything before.  So when she found a $40 headboard on Craigslist that she wanted me to paint, I said, “How about I teach you how to do it?”  She wasn’t thrilled (to be totally honest), but she agreed.  I had just gotten a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP paint sprayer in the mail, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to use it.  This isn’t the type of sprayer that you’d use for huge areas, like walls, but it’s perfect for things like furniture and cabinets.

I set up plastic sheeting in my garage and got her headboard prepped for painting (using a deglosser to remove the shiny factory finish instead of sanding it).  Don’t you wish you had a big sister to do all of your prep work?   Ha!  Then, to try out the sprayer myself, I used it to apply a primer coat (Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3).

I have a few other paint sprayers myself, and the Fine Finish Max felt different to me than the other ones.  It was much lighter weight to hold in my hand so my hands didn’t get fatigued.  I did have a hard time using it the first time because you are supposed to hold it 6″-12″ away from the item you are painting – much closer than my other paint sprayers.  But, once I got the hang of that, it was really easy.

After the primer dried, it was Leigh Ann’s turn.  I gave her a quick set of instructions (basically just overlap the strokes by about 1/3 and use your legs to move up and down instead of your bending your wrists), and I turned her loose.  Since she is not a DIYer, I had no idea how it was going to go.

As it turns out, Leigh Ann was a beast with that paint sprayer!

She just worked from one side of the headboard to the other, making sure that she was overlapping strokes and keeping the sprayer steady.

When she was finished, she remarked how easy it was to use and that there were no drips at all.  The fact that someone who had never painted anything was able to use it straight out of the box with about 30 seconds of instruction has me sold.  Clean up was a breeze and the paint sprayer used much less paint than any of my other sprayers.  MUCH less paint.

Her headboard hasn’t made it back to her house yet, because I’m the one with the truck.  A big sister who is a DIYer AND drives a truck?  Leigh Ann is lucky, isn’t she?  Ha!

If you are looking for your first paint sprayer to use on furniture pieces, this is the one to get.  You can get it on Amazon for $70 and free Prime shipping (affiliate link).

Or, how about just winning one?  Leave a comment below to be entered to win a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer!  This sweepstakes will be open through 8/6/2014 and is open to US residents, ages 18 and up.  Good luck!  (Edited on 8/7/14 to add that this giveaway is now closed.)

I would love to win this paint sprayer! I’ve tried 3 different kinds of sprayers and none of them work great – especially the first time I pull it out. I usually spend about 2-3 hours trying to get it to work! This sprayer looks amazing!

I never used a sprayer and you made it sound so easy. I have a old ugly china hutch that my mother gave me and I hate to get rid of it. I want to give it a fresh new look in burgundy but felt brushing/rolling the paint on will give it a weird textured look. Spraying will give it a nice smooth finish. Great giveaway. Thanks

I would LOVE to win a paint sprayer. I drool over them everytime I am at Menards. My father-in-law was a painter by trade and my hubby used to work for him in the summers, and insists that there is a trick to using them – implying that it isn’t for me. I would LOVE to prove him wrong!! LOL

Oh My Gosh!!! In January I broke both my wrists. Yeah, my granddaughter and I were having a date at the Roller rink. Guess who fell? Anyway, since ‘healing’ I haven’t been able to use my paint sprayer as it is so heavy. This would be wonderful for me as I have unfinished projects that I can’t get to. Using a brush now is difficult as well, and I don’t always like the way a brush piece looks. This would be awesome to try! I’m especially excited because your sister didn’t have a problem with it. That kind of information helps!

My armoire has been waiting for a new coat of paint for a couple of years and gives me the evil eye every time I walk by because it has been so neglected. Problem is, I’ve never painted anything quite so large and quite honestly, have been so reluctant to attempt painting it for fear that it I’ll make a total mess of it. After seeing Leigh Ann’s success and her gorgeous headboard, a paint sprayer would give me a much needed push to get the job done!

Hi Lindsay, I love your website and have done several of your projects. I have been debating wether or not to get a paint sprayer but have not wanted to make the commitment. We are building our house this summer and I am building several pieces of furniture as well as the cabinets and walk in closets. A sprayer would make the furniture look professional and I would not have to obsess of brush streaks! I coach Odyssey of the Mind at my kids school and involve my daughters in all of my making activities. Thanks for showing women and girls can do anything they set out to accomplish!

My wife and I are expecting a baby In January 2015. Recently we were given the opportunity to either get rid of or find a place for her younger sister (now 24) Bedroom suit she had as a child. It is white with out of date hardware as well as little flower painted on the front of the drawers and a few places where stickers had once been placed.

We were already loading it into my truck before her parents got done with what they were saying. We are planning on getting a crib but thought we could refinish the chest of draws, wardrobe, and side table and be able to use them for the baby and years to come.

Well i have been given the task to refinish, paint and change hardware….not a hard task. I don’t plan on using a brush because of how it turns out sometimes. I plan on getting a sprayer to make the job easier and have a better coverage. This sprayer would be awesome to buy if not win.

Awesome! I’m a spray paint junkie – if it can be sprayed, I always default to that since the finish and speed of application is so much better than brushes or rollers. It’d be awesome to be able to use any color paint, though, and not be limited to the store’s selection of canned spray paint!

I too, am an older diy sister to a younger non diy sister. I love it. I have used many other sprayers &
Have a problem with the far distance I need to stand from my piece. I am visually impaired so this sprayer sounds perfect for me. Thanks for sharing!

The finish came out superb, no brush strokes or roller fluff balls (as I call them)….I’m totally amazed at how perfect the finish turned out. I can just imagine all the DIY redo’s possible with a spray painter like this.

That headboard came out great. I could definitely use this sprayer for so many projects around my house. My kids and I just moved into our own place and in order to get furniture on a small budget, everything is mismatched or needs repairs. I’m looking at a lot of painting in my future to get things to look like they all go together and this would save a ton of time. Fingers crossed. 🙂

GREAT job! Love the color!! I think it’s wonderful there is something out there like this to make painting so much easier. I know when I paint walls and such I end up wearing more paint than the walls do, don’t ask me how I end up doing that, I don’t have a clue. I would just love to win this!
