My Nursery Inspiration

by Lindsay Ballard on March 8, 2010 75 Comments

For several months now, I’ve been trying to picture in my mind’s eye the perfect nursery to assemble for my soon-to-be little one. All I can picture is soft, neutral colors. No bright pink or bright blue. No giant polka dots on the walls. No cars painted on every square inch of space (although we still love my son’s room).

I thought it was odd that I kept gravitating to white and tan. Those colors don’t seem very “baby” to me, but it was really the direction I was headed. Then, I saw this photo, and I knew I was right on the money.

DecorPad

How beautiful! It’s very gender neutral and very understated, but gorgeously elegant at the same time.

I plan on mimicking the canopy over the crib, the sweet shelf hanging on the wall (mine will showcase vintage baby clothes), the chandelier, and even the paint and trim technique. My crib is a blonde wood, but I still think I can make it work – my grandmother bought the crib for us as a gift before my son was born, so I’m NOT going to get rid of it simply because it doesn’t match perfectly.

The only thing that I think I will change will to be to add in some tiny pink accents. I definitely don’t want anything over the top, but I do want to add it in somewhere for an elegant splash of color.

Wait, did you catch that? Pink?!? It’s a GIRL!

Congrats on your GIRL!!!!! How exciting! When we did Indy's nursery, it was done in white and tan with touches of blue. I loved it. It was our favorite room in the house because it was so soothing.
I can't wait to see HER nursery!

Congrats on the new little one… I love muted tones like that as well. My husband is totally into dinosaurs for if we ever have a nursery. I will have to somehow incorporate that as well. I am thinking vintage prints or something like that.

Pink touches here and there would be gorgeous to that neutral pallet. I'm sure what ever you do will be beautiful. As she gets older be prepared for more than a few touches of pink. My daughter is 3 and her room is now an EXPLOSION of pink. Not what I had planned. Congratulations, girls are great.

Well, congrats on the new baby on the way! I love this nursery picure. The pink accents will be beautiful! I've been making crib bedding and have been laying out tan and white fabric. I wondered if it would be liked by anyone. Sort of the soft, cottage look. Well, mine is more of a natural colored linen and ivory linen. This picture clinches it. I'm gonna make one.
I hope you post the finished room.

CONGRATS on the pink baby dust!

Be careful of curtains and whatnot hanging next to a crib. I have a grabby little girl and needed to move the crib away from the curtains. Don't want them to pull it down on top of them!

I got a gorgeous canopy for my oldest and we waited till she was in her "big girl bed" before putting it up.

Congrats again and I can't wait to see what you do with your girly nursery!

Blessings to your family. I think the "soothing" comment says it all. My daughter had something similar with a Winnie the Pooh (the understated color one) motif. She called the color "taupe" and took much teasing for it. It looked stunning and soothing. She used a light wood crib and natural shelf and wood valance to match.

I just discovered your website and am delighted!

The inspiration picture is beautiful and so will be whatever you come up with. I can't wait to see it! Just a side note however, a canopy above a crib with the curtains hanging down is a very big safety issue. You may want to rethink that and maybe hold off until she is older to use it.

I can't say I agree. . .but that must be my interior design background. The room is great, I'll give you that. . .but not for a BABY?? I agree that you don't have to go over board with pink, blue, cars, or polka dots or the usual stereotypical baby designs. . .but there has been much research as to color for soothing and stimulating babies and tan/beige and white just doesn't offer either. It would work if you have some small areas of color-maybe one accent wall or a coordinating lamp shade, rug, and pillow. Of course this room does not look anything like a realistic baby's room. . .where are the toys, books, where is the LOVE? Its a nice ideal, but it just does not work for me-I'm sure you will make it your own design though. Good luck with the new little one and the design of the room.

Congratulations! I am also having a baby girl due at the end of June!
I struggled with decor for a long time. I envisioned something that goes with the rest of my decor taste. something darker, with lots of great and a colour accent or purple, cause there is WAY too much pink out there. But alas I could not find fabrics that I liked and got all upset and in one of those hasty moments of indecision that come in pregnancy purchased a fabric that i really love but that is pink and green… and i didnt just get a bit. Oh no. I got $200 worth! dont make that mistake. if you cant find what you are looking for. go home, calm down and think. dont buy $200 worth of fabric that makes you change everything.
its the opposite of what you are showing here (which I DO love btw and might use for our second child down the road) its all very modern with bright pinks and greens. I intend to do the room with white and grey walls and only the bedding and a dresser in bright pink.
