Holla! It’s a No Sew Burlap Bunting

Did it surprise you to see a burlap bunting on my summer patio?  It surprised me, to be quite honest. I’m generally not a burlap gal – nor a bunting gal – and the fact that I incorporated it somewhere in my home threw me for a spin.  It just seemed to fit.

Now, I don’t believe that every single element in my home needs to be totally unexpected.  However, I do like to incorporate something unexpected into something that’s pretty traditional every single chance I get.  So, Holla!

No, I didn’t misspell ‘Hola’ as my bilingual son pointed out to me.  It really is supposed to say ‘Holla’ – as in, “Hey!  What’s up?”

Regardless of what the banner says, it was super easy to make.  Like use a glue gun and 15 minutes of your time easy.  Like that space needs something there and I don’t want to buy anything easy.  Like that party starts in 30 minutes and I need a banner STAT easy.  Here’s how I did it:

1.  First, I drew five triangles on a piece of burlap.  They are 8 inches tall and 8 inches across at the top.  I literally drew out the measurements with a Sharpie and then connected the angled edges by using a straight edge.  Then, I cut them out.

2.  Next, I flipped the triangles over so that the Sharpie marks were on the back, and I sketched out my letters with the marker.

3.  Then, with a little paint brush and some black paint, I painted the letters and added a little embellishment.  I used black latex paint because I already had it out for this project, but acrylic craft paint would work just fine, too.  You can use any color you’d like.

4.  Once the letters were dry, I broke out my glue gun and glued the top of the triangles inside of extra wide double fold bias tape (they have it at every fabric store and a lot of craft stores).  I spaced the triangles out evenly – a few inches in between each one.

5.  Then, I just tied the bunting up on some large eye hooks that were already on the corners of my patio wall.  The 3 yards of bias tape wasn’t quite long enough for my bunting to drape properly, so I just cut another bias strip in half and tied it to teach end of the bunting.  I tried to tie it to the eye hooks stylistically, so it looks fun.
