DIY Hanging Bed Frame Faux Planter

Before the kids and I left for our crazy road trip, I tackled a few projects around my house.  One project that I just can’t wait to share with y’all is how I decorated the weird ledge above my front door.

If you remember from the previous post, the space is about 5 feet wide x 5 feet deep x 7 j tall. I certainly could have put a large vase or fake tree up there, but you guys know that’s certainly not my style.  Besides, if I was going to put a tree somewhere, it would be a very large, very dead one.

I woke up in the middle of the night one night with a brilliant idea.  It would be using something that I already had and didn’t have a place to store.  And, it would leave a lasting impression on my visitors.

Any guesses as to what it is?

It’s the Ikea Lillesand headboard and footboard, that used to be in my guest room, hung on its side.  We screwed some hooks into the studs in the ceiling and simply hung the bed from black decorator chain that I picked up from Home Depot.  On the rails, I hung Ikea Asker containers with spray painted Bygel S-hooks and stuffed the containers with divided Fejka plants.  The hardest part was hauling the headboard and footboard up the ladder.

I think this look is so fun!  While my walls aren’t slated to be painted non-beige until next year, I can at least have something funky hanging in that space until then.

    This is brilliant Lindsay! I have a space exactly like that in my dining room and have been thinking about what to do with it. I, too, am not interested in throwing just a plant or pottery (or baskets) up there. Can I steal your idea? 🙂

    I just aquired iron bunk bed side rail for the upper bunk and it was used as a plant shelf..I had the hardest time trying to making it a hanging shelf cause I wanted the lower part to get sun ligth for the plants. Thanks to your blog It was very helpful.

    Mega props to you for following your artistic instinct, and not worrying about showing it off. Many wouldnt do this or even contemplate such a thing, and that is exactly what I adore about it.

    I feel, truly original projects, from ones own imagination is what defines the creative soul. In this world of “pinning”, “knockoffs”, and everyone creating their own brand, its rare to find an original and unseen idea, especially one well executed.

    I prefer to stray away from projects that are/were trending, and/or come complete with a prominent mainstream following. Of course I can appreciate an excellent job well done, whether its a one of a kind or a recreation.. Don’t get me wrong. Yet, Besides learning about an individuals personal technique, process, and supplies they prefer, most ideas are immediately added to my “Overdone & Overrated” list.

    Your “Hanging Bed Frame and Faux Planter” will not be on that list. I can’t say this about many projects I see online. Maybe it has been done before, this same way…but I haven’t seen it till now, and for that I just wanted to thank you 🙂
