The DIY, No Sew, Use What You Have, Knotted Christmas Tree Garland

by Lindsay Ballard on December 12, 2011 51 Comments

I’ve been pretty lackadaisical about getting our Christmas decorations up this year.  We normally decorate for the holidays over Thanksgiving weekend, but because I was working on stenciling our bathroom, it didn’t get done.  Our weekends since then have been jammed with soccer practice, visiting Santa and trips to Home Depot, so the decorations got pushed to the back burner.

Much to Zack and Emma’s delight, we brought home a tree this weekend.  It’s lovely and tall and full – and it needed more than just white lights and our collection of favorite ornaments.  I didn’t want to buy anything new to add to the tree, so I dug around in my craft room until I came up with an idea.  I gathered some burlap in natural and white, along with some bleached and unbleached muslin, and created a DIY, no sew, use what I had, knotted Christmas tree garland.

The garland could not have been more simple to put together.  I began by tearing my fabric into strips about 6 inches wide and ranging in length from a yard to 3 yards or so.  I alternated the fabrics in a random pattern and joined them by tying simple knots.

I really love the way the different textured fabrics look when they are joined together.  I also had some beige tulle in my craft room, so I tied some of it into the garland to add a bit of shimmer and even more texture.  I think it’s a nice contrast with the rough burlap.

If you still haven’t put your tree up or think it needs a little something extra, raid your fabric stash and see what you can come up with.  You, too, could have a no sew, use what you have Christmas tree garland.

Final Day to Help Give the Gift of Good

by Lindsay Ballard on December 9, 2011 2,176 Comments

Happy Friday, Friends!

Today is the very last day to cast your vote for the Porter Family to win Home Depot’s Gift of Good.  They are one of only 9 military families in the running to win a $20,000 home makeover from the Home Depot.  You can read more of their story here and here.

I have greatly enjoyed getting to know this family of 9 over the last few weeks, and I would like to thank them for their service to our country.  I know that Dad Tony is the one who is physically serving, but Mom Tina and the children are doing more than their part being back at home without him.

I wish I could pull off one of those surprises that you see on the news – secretly sneak Tony back home from Afghanistan for a Christmas surprise.  But since I can’t, the best thing I can do is rally my Glue Gun Army to vote for the Porter Family one last time.

So, right now, please visit the Home Depot Facebook page and vote for the Porter Family (#9).  All you have to do is click the button next to their name and then click Vote.  There are no sign ups, no email sharing, nothing like that.  It’s just two simple clicks that could change this family’s life.  Would you please vote for the Porters today?

I’d also like to give a public shout out to one of my sweet readers, Gari Ann.  She has posted on her personal Facebook page just about every day, asking for her friends to vote for the Porter Family.  She doesn’t know the Porter family, doesn’t know me personally, and doesn’t even live in our state.  She’s just a sweetie who’s been doing her best to help this holiday season.  Thank you, Gari Ann (and Happy Birthday!).

Speaking of the Home Depot, it’s time to reveal who won the $50 Home Depot gift card from my friends at One Project Closer!

Congrats to Commenter 61, Kjerstin!

I will send you an email to coordinate the OPC guys getting your gift card to you.

Have a great weekend, folks!
