One Change Leads to Another

by Lindsay Ballard on May 2, 2011 14 Comments

Last week, I ran into SteinMart to see if they had some cute pajamas for a “Jammies and Jewels” Royal Wedding watch party I was attending early, early on Friday morning.

I didn’t find any.  But, I did find some delicious new chandelier shades on clearance for just $2.94 a piece.

I think they are so fun!  I was shocked at how perfectly the blue in the shades matched the blue on my walls (Smoked Turquoise by Glidden).

Now, I feel like I need to do something more with my chandelier, which is what the builder installed and definitely not my first choice in light fixtures.  I’m seeing some spray paint in my future- perhaps in turquoise or bright green.  And if I don’t like it?  No biggie.  I never really liked it to begin with.

As with anything I do, one change often leads to another.

Speaking of changes, if you haven’t already voted for my room – #73! – in the Vintage Revival’s Room Makeover Contest, please, please, please do.  I would be forever grateful.  So would my husband, as I had him painting our master bedroom all weekend long (we aren’t finished, but SQUEE! it’s awesome) and the thought of painting the living room makes him really, really grumpy.  Click here to vote – all it takes is one click, so you could do it in like 15 seconds – or 5 if you have an internet connection much faster than mine.

P.S. I have no idea why my photos are kind of yellow on top. I’m sure I’ve hit the “make the top of your photos yellow” button on my camera and didn’t know it.  That’s really annoying.

A Garden Fit for a Fairy

by Lindsay Ballard on April 26, 2011 18 Comments

About a month ago, I sent my mother-in-law a link to a sweet little project I found online.  She had recently retired and loves to garden, so I thought it would be something fun for her to work on.

I have apparently been living under a rock, because I had no idea that these lovely little Fairy Gardens were actually a “thing.” Once I began looking into it more, I found all sorts of darling new worlds.

Imagine Childhood

Sure, those of you Fairy Garden connoisseurs can go ahead and laugh at me, but I bet I’m not alone in not knowing about these lovely little container gardens.  You can plant them in containers indoors or outdoors.

The Pure Gardener

There are all sorts of online shops (and local gardening shops, depending upon where you live) that sell little garden gates, houses, animals, and fairies to populate your new world.  There’s a great tutorial here.

So, back to my mother-in-law…She and my father-in-law came in town over Easter weekend to visit with the family.  She told me before they arrived that she had some things to bring for a little project to work on with 5 year-old Zack.  After a visit to our favorite local gardening store for a container, some herbs, and moss, this is what they created:

Isn’t that so cute?  I put it on our kitchen table so we would see it every day.  I pulled up some online fairy garden shops to show Zack, and he’s already picked out some new items he wants to add to our next one.

What about you?  Have you ever made a fairy garden?  Want to try?
