Candybot 3000 – The Ultimate DIY Halloween Costume

by Lindsay Ballard on November 1, 2011 1,967 Comments

What do you get when you cross a perfectionist DIYer with an obsessive glazer?  You get my husband and myself.  You also get the Candybot 3000.

Tom did an amazing job with Zack’s costume this year, and I just had to share it with you.  Obviously, the Candybot 3000 was the hit of the neighborhood.  Tom actually made the costume using products that we all know and use often in our DIY projects.

The robot form was built from Elmer’s Foam Boards glued together with hot glue.  He cut out the shapes for the buttons and helmet and glued them on to the form.  He actually used DAP DryDex spackling around the shapes to contour the edges…and then sanded it with a finish sander and 220-grit sandpaper (I am so not even kidding).

He coated the entire costume with Mod Podge and then spray painted it with Rustoleum’s Bright Coat Metallic Finish in Aluminum.  I instructed in glazing it with Ralph Lauren glaze in Black Silk to give it a worn look.

Zack was so proud of his costume, and I was so proud that we were able to put our DIY skills and favorite products to work in a non-home decor fashion.

I hope you and your family had a great Halloween and that the kids have come down from their sugar high!

Milestones

by Lindsay Ballard on August 26, 2011 6 Comments

In the span of about week, we had two huge milestones in our lives.  These kids just aren’t listening when I keep telling them to not grow up to fast.

First, Emma had the nerve to have her first birthday.  Wasn’t she just born, like yesterday?  The past year has certainly flown by faster than I could have ever imagined.  She is such a bright and funny little girl, and she’s already challenging me in ways her brother never dreamed of.  I can tell that life with Emmy is going to be a wild ride.  It helps that she’s dang cute, though!

And then.  And THEN!  Zack decided he could just go ahead and start Kindergarten.  I don’t remember approving that.  He was all smiles on his first day, and it sounds like he had a great time.  Although it’s hard to let go, I’m excited about his new adventure.  He’s a little smarty pants, and I’m positive he’s going to wow ’em.

All of these changes make me ponder what’s next.  Driving?  College?  Weddings?  Oh, my.  I’m not ready for this!

P.S.  If you haven’t entered the UglySofa.com giveaway for a new slipcover, get to hopping!  The entries close tonight.
