After years of huffing and puffing while pushing my giant ugly sofas, various brightly colored dressers and who knows what else around my home, I finally broke down and bought some of those furniture sliders.
I’d seen them on TV for a while, and then the started popping up everywhere from Home Depot to my grocery store. They are packaged under various names, but they all basically do the same thing. I found a package of four for under $10 and figured they were worth a shot.
Y’all. I’m not exaggerating when I say that they have changed my DIY life.
Believe it or not, they work fantastically. All you have to do is lift each corner of the piece of furniture you want to move and place a slider underneath. There is foam on the top to protect your furniture and the bottom is slick plastic to help you glide the furniture across carpet. What used to be hard work now feels like pushing a baby stroller. Honestly!
My set even came with these little furry “slip cover” type things that you can put over the plastic portion so that you don’t scratch up hardwoods, laminate, concrete or tile. I haven’t had to use that part yet since the plastic part does just fine on my tile. I bet they would make the resistance a little bit less if I used them on the tile, though. I’m just to lazy to change them when I transition from carpet to tile.
Have you used furniture movers before? Love them or hate them?
Ella says
So luv them! My only problem is I tend to forget where I last stashed them when it’s been several months since last using them. I’ll have to look for the ones with furry slipper option, they sound like perfection! We have both carpet & hard flooring, what a breeze those would be. My current fix is washcloths, lol.
Lindsay says
Washcloths are a pretty genius fix, Ella! I wouldn’t have thought of that myself.
Ella says
Thx for the compliment. I’m sure they don’t work quite as well as those lil slips do. Sometimes we have a slip off of the movers from the washcloths & scratches…ugh.
Lindsay says
Someone else mentioned putting felt on the bottom of them. I wonder if that would work well on carpeting, too?
Chris says
Oh, I’ve always wondered if those things work! Even with my husband helping we often get lazy and drag heavy pieces. Which leads to scratches in the hard wood. This sounds like a great, inexpensive solution! Thanks for sharing!
Lindsay says
Much cheaper than refinishing your hard woods! It’s hard to do it by hand with heavy pieces. And I’m a wimp, so my husband is left doing most of the work.
Stephanie says
I bought some a few months ago for two bucks and we used them, but the bottoms got scratched on the concrete sub floor (we are installing laminate). I thought I would have to trash them, but I am going to make “slipcovers”! Thanks for the idea!
Lindsay says
Totally! Or, I wonder if you could just put some smooth duct tape on the bottom of them?
Suzan says
Have them, love them! I even have a set that I leave on under the legs of the bunk beds in my guest room just so I can move them away from the wall to make the beds. I have a huge four poster bed in my bedroom that I move from one wall to the other when I get bored. Easy peasy with the sliders. The best thing is that I don’t have to empty my hutch or my dresser when I want to change their location. It can be a struggle getting the sliders under the furniture when it is really heavy but once they are under everything moves so easily.
Lindsay says
That’s smart to leave them under the bunk beds so you can move them to make the beds. I wouldn’t have thought of doing that, but it makes total sense!
Dharma says
This comment has changed my life. Just thought Suzan should know!! Thanks from my tired, aching back 🙂
Lindsay says
Yeah, it’s brilliant!
sonny says
I need some of those around here… Too much pushing, pulling and lifting heavy stuff for YEARS has played havoc with my back…
thanks for letting us know they really work.
Lindsay says
Yeah, I always go to bed with a sore back if I’ve been moving furniture the hard way. Look for them the next time you are at Home Depot, the grocery store, Target, etc.

Lazy?! I wouldn’t consider that lazy at all… it’s just another way to get the job done and considering I’m 5’3″ and generally tiny with absolutely NO arm muscle, it’s the only way I can move bigger pieces of furniture around the room. And because it makes the job a whole lot easier, it makes the idea of rearranging a room less daunting. I don’t know – I guess if I hired movers and saw them using these, I’d be like – SERIOUSLY? But I absolutely love them for the everyday stuff. I even throw some felt on the bottom and use them to move furniture around my hardwood floors and don’t have to worry about dings or scratches. They’re really great.
Lindsay says
So SMART, not LAZY! 😀
Nicole @ Post Grad says
Haha yay! Much better. 🙂

My grandma bought us a set of those (ours are more rectangle and about 2x the size) back when they first came out. (She loves home shopping network stuff.) Anyways, we were thinking yea right but we used them on our huge entertainement center and it worked like a charm!!! Now we use them and hope to never break them. 🙂
Lindsay says
It’s crazy that such a little thing could make such a difference.

After years of using sheets of cardboard (which does work great) I finally bought some and FELL IN LOVE!! We even move our pool table with them–easy breezy!! Like someone else mentioned I seem to forget them under furniture and have to search the house for them!
Lindsay says
Cardboard is really smart, too. Why have I just been dragging my furniture for years and not thinking of things like this?
Lovie says
I bought a set about a year ago but just recently used them for the first time. At first I thought I had wasted my money because I was trying to use the fabric covering over the plastic to move a piece of furnture over carpet and it just wasn’t working –
silly me- then my son advised me that I was using them incorrectly- I now think they were well worth the investment 🙂
Lindsay says
Totally! I’m glad you got them figured out!

I’ve read &re-read your blog re painting laminate. I’m using electric sander with an 80 grit. Top is white & I’m beginning to see light brown spots but the piece still feelis it s very smooth. Should I sand more until it feels scratchy or enough. I’m lbremers@att.net.
I am subscribing to your blog cause I think you are great! Thank you for all the interesting stuff you take the time to publish.
Lindsay says
Hi Lou Ann-
I think you are fine to go ahead and prime. You don’t want it to be scratchy – still smooth is good! You just need it to not be shiny. The high adhesive bonding primer will work just fine where you are now.
Thanks for subscribing!
robyn says
These are the best! I leave them under my sofa, love seat and recliner all the time they all are low to the ground skirts so you don’t see them at all! Well worth the money.
Lindsay says
So very smart, Robyn!

they are a god sent to the house *women* who are forever moving there furniture……friends loaned us there’s along time ago and we fell in love with em then they started popping up everywhere so i grabbed a box…mine came with 4 lg and 4 small…..worth every cent!!!
Lindsay says
Nice! I haven’t seen them in different sizes. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for those. I could always use a few more sets.
M @ random musings says
I too am a big fan! When I got em as a gift I was snottily skeptical but I love them:-)

I was like that, too. I’m usually weary of As Seen on TV products, but these really do work.
John@RemodelingBIBLE says
Lindsay, it’s not the “lazy” way…it’s the “convenient” way!
Lindsay says
Ha! You are right, John!

I work in the commercial furniture industry and our movers use these daily to move office cubicles and fully loaded file cabinets. It saves time and their backs!
Lindsay says
I bet they love the furniture sliders even more than I do!
Pam says
Iwant to get a set of sliders, But my file cabinet and sewing machine cabinet don’t have legs, the’re flat to the carpet. Any ideas? Thanks, pam
