Zack’s Closet Update + HomeRight Giveaway

Many times, there are projects that we have to do around our home that aren’t particularly jaw dropping, like cleaning the garage or reorganizing the Tupperware cabinet.  They are necessary evils that don’t exactly have that “Wow!” factor when it’s time to blog about them.  Today, I have one of those projects to share with you.

Not long ago, this was Zack’s closet.

The messiness of it absolutely drove me crazy.  But really, the shelves and hanging rod that the building installed were essentially the least efficient use of space, so he really had no room for anything.  Redoing his closet has been on my to do list for a long time, and I decided that I needed to tackle it before I got started on his room.

Once I cleared out the closet, it looked like this.

I grabbed my hammer and demoed the shelves – which was awesome.

After that, I primed the walls and ceiling and used some spackle and spray on wall texture to cover the areas where the shelves used to be on the wall.

Then, I pained the entire closet my favorite neutral paint color, Lindsay White.  Even though the closet is long, it’s not very wide.  So, I was able to use my HomeRight Mini PaintStick to paint.  I love this tool, since you don’t have to do weird paint stick yoga moves in a narrow space.  It drastically cuts down on my drips since I don’t have to use a roller tray, too.

Even Emma was able to do a little painting.

It took about an hour for me to paint all four walls and the ceiling.  As always, I put on 2 coats of paint.

I then took Zack’s closet measurements to The Container Store to get them to help me design a plan using their Elfa shelving.  Now, this shelving is more expensive than what you can get at a home improvement store, but Elfa has so many more options.  I also wanted a lot of helping figuring out the best way to maximize the space in this closet. At The Container Store, they helped me lay it out with tons of shelving along the long wall and hanging space on the short wall. The Elfa shelving was definitely really pricey, but I’m very happy with it.  When I went to pick it up after it was custom cut, they had everything ready for me that I needed to install it, except for a hammer and drill. It took me about four hours to install it (because I installed the hanging rails backwards and upside down the first time – whomp, whomp), but it has created so much more usable space in his closet.

Sorry I didn’t stage his closet for you with matching colors and trinkets.  Y’all know I like to keep it real.

I still have a lot of stuff that I want to do it in the closet, like getting a new light fixture and some bins for him to put some of his smaller items.  But, let’s be honest – after I spent all that money on the Elfa shelves, I didn’t really have the budget for that right now.

I’ll post more pictures when I get the bins and that sort of thing, but I am so thrilled to get his closet in some sort of order.  With all of that empty shelving space, he now has zero excuse to leave stuff all over the floor of his room.  Right?  Right?!?

    I wish I could do what you do. Our closets are the same crappy design as your used to be and they are soooo hard to use efficiently. So jealous of your new closet.

    The entire house! Last time I painted was about 5 years ago. We’ve got arched ceilings and even on my tallest ladder I can’t reach well.

    When we bought our townhouse, one of the first things we did was take our closet measurements down to the Container Store to get Elfa shelving too! I love that they are so good about helping you figure out what parts will help you achieve your closet goals, and our bedroom closet looks so pretty now, that we removed the weird bi-fold doors and just leave it exposed! Elfa is worth every penny!
    I wish I’d had one of those mini-paint sticks when we were painting around here, and hopefully be the next time i decide to change up the colors, I’ll have decided to buy one!

    My daughter’s room with its vaulted ceiling and weirdly square closet could use some paint love.

    I’d paint my whole house! Long story…but my dog had a cut on her ear and every time she shook her head…blood splatter! It took a while for me to notice. Just long enough for the whole house–with it’s impossible to clean matte finish paint–to now need repainting.

    What a great tool! That’d be perfect for my painting jobs with a 3yr old and 1yr old around. Last time we painted my son found the paint tray and roller and decided he didn’t like the color of our carpet or the couch. Yep!

    Hi – I would use the MiniPaint Stick in my guest room/master bath. Yes, the largest bedroom in my house is NOT the one with an attached bathroom, so it’s the guest room. Bathrooms are hard to paint, this would make the job much easier. Thanks!

    I’d paint my kitchen. It’s a nice terracotta color, but the flippers I bought the house from only did one thin layer of cheap paint, so it’s gotten scratched or rubbed off in a lot of spots. And once my roommate moves out, I’ll paint my guest bathroom. She currently has it hot pink and orange. Fun, but BRIGHT!
