Interesting Wood Patterns on Floors and Walls

by Lindsay Ballard on October 19, 2012 2,226 Comments

Now that the playroom is finished, I’ve turned my attention to my sad little office. Right now, it’s the place where everything that doesn’t have a home goes to die. I seriously climb over ladders, random toys and boxes of other assorted junk to get to my computer. One day, I may not make it out of there alive.

I’m determined to turn the office into a place that I enjoy spending time. It’s the smallest bedroom in the house, so I have to think longer and harder than usual on every element that goes into the room.

Instead of doing a crazy paint treatment in there like I’ve done in every other room, I have decided to do a fun wood treatment. I’ve always loved wood floors with a great pattern to them, so I figured I could do something similarly interesting on the walls.

I’ll be creating my focal wall over the next week (okay, probably longer than that because we all know how slow I work), so I thought I’d share you some great wood pattern inspiration shots that I’ve collected. The vision for my wooden focal wall is different than these patterns, but I think it’s going to look just as cool.

I’m not traditionally an all wood furniture gal since I am drawn to bright colors, but I do think wood tones can add a lot of warmth to a room.  I’m hoping that my focal wall will give some needed “oomph” to my little space.

What do you think?  Have you seen some cool wood patterns that I should check out?

Do You Lead a Colorful Life?

by Lindsay Ballard on October 12, 2012 438 Comments

Color is undoubtedly the single most important element when I think about the rooms in my home. I love it, live it, need it and crave it. Simply changing the color combinations I put together can give a room more of a dramatic impact than getting all new furniture. Color changes everything.

I try to tie my color palette together from room to room without necessarily having the same colors throughout my home. Blue is generally my unifying hue, but gray, green, yellow and red often join the ranks, too. However, I find myself wanting to mix other colors into my life as well.

One of those colors is violet. I actually think of it as a variation on blue, so it is easy to mix with grays, greens and yellows. I’ll even admit to you for the first time that I now have some violet streaks in my hair!  If you don’t consider yourself a violet person, take a look at these lovely images.

I am completely inspired by that interior shot.  It’s a perfect example of mixing bright colors in such a way that doesn’t make the room look blinding or garish – they are grounded by that great gray.  And the stacked tables turned bookshelves?  Genius!

What colors inspire you?  Glidden has a project going on through the end of this week (Sunday, October 15th) called the Glidden #MyColorfulLife Project.  They are putting together a huge mosaic of colorful images submitted by blog readers.  Images can be of anything – a flower, a piece of furniture you have repainted, a finger painted master piece by your children.  They only ask that the images be something you find beautiful or just plain fun.  More details about the project are in a short video that can be found here.

Because I know that you guys are some of the most color inspired folks in Blogland, I’d love for you to participate!  Between now and Sunday, head to the MyColorfulLife app on Facebook and submit your favorite images by just uploading them.  I would absolutely love to see your inspirations within the color mosaic.  I’m such a visual person, so projects like this really excite me.  I’m looking forward to seeing the final mosaic.

Have a colorful weekend!
