This year, I’m letting a pillow guide me through every design choice I make in my home.
I was lucky to pick up this French Laundry pillow for a steal during a recent sale on One Kings Lane, and I think its message is a great sentiment to remember as we begin a new year.
I try to evaluate everything I bring into my home, as I have long thought any item needed to serve at least one of two purposes: 1) Function and 2) Happiness. If an item can serve both purposes? Even better.
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.“
-William Morris, 19th c. textile designer and artist
I’m not always successful at following this advice, but I’m going to make a more concerted effort to keep it in the forefront of my mind this year.
Do you use this sort of thought process when you are looking/buying/creating things for your home? What type of mantra are you using for 2012?
Absolutely beautiful pillow and one of my favourite sentiments. I also try to abide by that mantra.
Happy new year Lindsay! I definitely do in my actual living space. My home is only 1400 sq feet but I have an additional 1000sq feet with basement and attic storage which is wonderful but it can easily become out of control. I need to go through and purge majorly! But my home I think is a great reflection of this quote!
My mantra for 2012: Don’t buy it – make it!!
I love those words by William Morris! Thanks for reminding me. I think I will write them down and put them somewhere that I can see everyday. I only want to have beautiful things in my home and everything should have some kind of meaning to me. Everything should be sacred and beautiful. I don’t like having stuff just for the sake of having stuff.
My mantra for 2012 is to “Use What I’ve Got” as an antidote to the “gathering” that I always seem to be doing! Hopefully, my reuse strategy will lead to following the “mantra” on your beautiful pillow! Come on over to Sweetwater Style and see how I am doing! Happy New Year!
I love, love, love this…can you share the maker or any other information. I have spent a ridiculous amount of time doing internet searches today, trying to find this pillow 🙂
Words to live by!!! Great post, Lindsay. 🙂
Absolutely! I recently picked up a cheap polished chrome kitchen cart that both serves as additional storage space and prep area, as well as a convenient place to store pretty things like a handmade spoon rest I got from Etsy.
Hi Lindsay,
I love that quote, it’s also the mantra that I follow too ~ which leads me to do some serious de-cluttering this time of year! How great that you found it on a pillow.
Happy 2012 🙂
My mantra this year is “be brilliant at the basics.” I don’t need to do anything new – I just need to be fantastic at what I am doing. Love your pillow!
