Happy Little Cacti

by Lindsay Ballard on June 12, 2015 2 Comments

The overarching goal for my home has always been one thing: fun.  I want my family to feel happy, energized and in good spirits the second they walk in the door.  I accomplish that through crazy wall treatments, boldly colored furniture and generally unexpected little touches.

And thanks to my latest find, I can do that through my plants, too.

Colorful cacti

I found these happy little cacti at Home Depot in the succulent section.  They are branded as Desert Gems, and cost a little over $5 a piece (including the cute little pots).  I selected blue, green and yellow for my home, but they were available in other colors, like pink and orange, too.

When I first saw these cacti, I was a little horrified.  Did they paint these plants?!?  But then, I realized they likely colored them through their water supply, like the white carnation experiment we all did as kids.  Maybe I should still be horrified?  Can I be horrified and happy at the same time?  That sounds like a question for a therapist.

When new growth on these little cacti comes in, the new spines are in the natural color of the plant.  My blue one was doing that before I brought it home from the store.  I think it looks pretty neat like that!

I don’t have the greenest of thumbs, so I am hopeful that I can keep these little gems alive.

Have you seen these brightly colored cacti before?  Do they fit the vibe of your home or are you more of a natural colored plant type of gal (or guy)?

I have good luck with cactus so will pass on what I have found. Water only once a month. Not a lot . I have some that I have had for several years. One of mine is getting reading to bloom. Has 8 blooms on it.
I also have a outside cactus here in Ohio. It has over 30 blooms on it.
