How to Clean Granite Countertops with Steam + SteamMachine Plus Giveaway

by Lindsay Ballard on January 28, 2015

My kitchen counters are generally a disaster.  Except for on Sunday afternoon when I force ask my family to help me clean the house, they are covered in school work, backpacks, empty plastic cups, and half-eaten bags of Goldfish. I’ve never been mistaken for Martha Stewart, y’all.

But, our food prep area gets wiped down (most) every night. This is always the place I worry about being super germy, but I don’t want to use anything too harsh on my granite countertops.  And whatever I did use ended up leaving them cloudy and streaky.

How to Clean Granite Countertops with Steam

Since steam is so good for my floors, showers, oven, and windows, I figured it might help clean my food prep area, too. So, I took the handheld portion out of my Home Right Steam Machine and added the squeege attachment to it.

Just like I would in the shower, I squeeged the counter while applying the steam.

When I was finished, I dried the counter with a clean microfiber cloth.

Y’all, I seriously can’t even believe the difference. When I run my hand over this section of countertop, it feels as smooth as glass. My countertops have never felt that clean, even when I use chemicals and sponges.

So, score another one for the Steam Machine Plus! (Amazon affiliate link) I might have to take over the Sunday kitchen duties from my husband since it’s so easy now. He can deal with the bathrooms instead of me. 🙂

(This giveaway is now closed and a winner has been notified.) HomeRight has generously offered a Steam Machine to give away to one Makely reader! To enter, simply leave a comment below telling me what’s the first thing you would clean with your new Steam Machine. This giveaway will be open through February 1, 2015 and is open to US residents, 18 years and older.

Good luck!

What?! This would be so useful. I’ve never used a steam machine before and I’m curious to see what it would do for the hard water stains on our shower door.

  3. Jennifer P says

I would definitely steam clean our shower! Followed closely by our tiled kitchen floors!

  4. Sue Taylor says

    January 28, 2015 at 8:45 am

I’d seriously use it on Everything ! I’m listing my house for sale in a few weeks and it needs to truly
sparkle. Granite countertops, shower door, windows !! Sue

I have a list so long, I would have trouble fitting it into the comments- for sure my teen daughter’s much abused bathroom vanity counter, which gets covered in makeup, my kitchen counter, the glass shower walls, my tiled floors….the list goes on and on. My youngest is immune compromised, so we do our best to keep things safe for him.

  6. Joanna A. says

    January 28, 2015 at 8:51 am

My slate tile floors, quickly followed by the granite countertops. (Maybe the reverse order!)

  7. Jackie says

    January 28, 2015 at 8:53 am

What a great idea! I’d start with my bathroom counters- I hate that they always look streaky after cleaning!

  8. Danica H says

    January 28, 2015 at 8:53 am

Where do I start!!!! Definitely my daughter’s bathroom ; /!

  9. Alanna says

    January 28, 2015 at 9:20 am

I have the same issue with my granite counters… i’d start there and then do my upstairs bathroom with it’s crazy 80’s mosaic tile and glass shower door… oh ooooh… and i’d use it to remove the ugly elephant print safari border in my half bath and the beach themed wall paper in my guest bath… yes my house is a collage of years and decor styles… don’t believe it? email me. i’ve got pictures!

  10. Bri D. says

I would steam clean all. the. things. Seriously though, I have never owned a steam machine so I would try it on everything!

  11. Caryn says

    January 28, 2015 at 9:37 am

Woah. I would definitely start with my kitchen, followed quickly by the entire house. I just moved into a new house and the previous owner left it less than sparkling clean and the kitchen is the worst!

  12. khadija says

    January 28, 2015 at 9:57 am

I would steam the old house we just bought from top to bottom!

Your post has opened my eyes to a wealth of steam opportunities! I live in a home where many of the windows don’t look completely clear even after a good cleaning, I would try the steamer on them to see if I got results as good as your counter.

  15. Karen says

    January 28, 2015 at 10:07 am

First place I would clean is the tile floor in the bathroom, followed by the shower/bath. Next up I would try it out on my stovetop. It is endless!

  16. Holly says

    January 28, 2015 at 10:22 am

Even though cleaning the counters is cool and I would do that, my tile floors need this. They’re not smooth at all, on top and the way they are cut, and I feel like I cannot for the life of me get that dirt out! Thanks!

  17. Julia @ It's Always Ruetten says

    January 28, 2015 at 10:33 am

I would tackle the baseboards throughout my house. I have recently found the aweomeness (it’s a word) of Clorox Wipes, but I know I need something a bit stronger for the baseboards. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

  18. Lori says

    January 28, 2015 at 10:41 am

Floors and tub/shower would be first on my list!

  19. Patti B says

    January 28, 2015 at 10:44 am

I didn’t know you could steam granite counters, but what a great idea! I use all natural cleaners and my counters look so dull, so that’s definitely what I would do first! Have always wanted a steam cleaner, but hubby would flip backwards if I bought one more gadget to help me clean. Thanks for offering this giveaway!

    January 28, 2015 at 10:55 am

this sounds like a steam dream. the rubber thing around the door on my frig is grimy and not gripping like it used to. i’m worried about keeping my food cold. PLUS i want to sanitize my john and see if this would get my tile grout to look all beautiful again. green and clean…i win. the earth wins.

  21. Amy Frazier says

    January 28, 2015 at 11:30 am

The very first thing I would clean with a steamer would be my tile floors in my kitchen, dining area, and 2 bathrooms!

  22. ryan says

    January 28, 2015 at 11:31 am

i would LOVE a steam machine! i have two big dogs, so the floors in my home are always kind of a disaster. and with all this rain we’ve been having lately, it’s even worse! thanks so much for hosting the giveaway!

  23. Tami L says

    January 28, 2015 at 11:34 am

The first thing would have to be the counter in my husband/daughters bathroom. Between the water spillage from my hubby’s shaving and the makeup from the girl child, this gets to be an icky place to clean! Lots of scrubbing for them when they DO clean. (I, of course, refuse to clean their bathroom!)

  24. Margaret says

    January 28, 2015 at 11:41 am

Definitely the shower in my husband’s bathroom.

  25. Kendra C. says

    January 28, 2015 at 11:58 am

I’d clean my granite counter tops. That looks wonderful.

  26. Amy says

    January 28, 2015 at 12:00 pm

I would have so many uses for a Home Right Steam Machine! Its first task would be doing the chemical-free oven cleaning technique demonstrated on your blog, though! Our oven does not have a self-clean feature…and with my asthma I can’t use most commercial oven cleaning solutions. Therefore, that task gets delegated to my husband, so you can guess how frequently my oven is cleaned…. 🙂

  27. Kathryn Becker says

    January 28, 2015 at 12:07 pm

The tile grout in the bathrooms!

  28. Peggy Laymon says

    my icky bathrooms!

  34. Tina Shaner says

    January 28, 2015 at 12:34 pm

Thats an awesome idea. I would have never thought to steam my granite counter tops. I’ve been frustrated with the streaks I’m left with. I’d use it for the counter tops and shower since it has a hand held attachment!

  35. Jennifer Letchford says

    January 28, 2015 at 12:38 pm

That is an intruiging trick! I’d use a steamer on the kitchen granite countertops. Followed by the shower doors in the bathroom, and the tile floors. And anywhere in the house it would help!

  36. Brittney Crabtree says

    January 28, 2015 at 12:43 pm

I would clean my granite counters too, they look great!

  37. lisa says

  41. Amy Martin Jones says

our showers. I love the handheld part of this steam mop! My old mop had that feature but it’s long gone now.

  46. Lindsay L says

    January 28, 2015 at 3:52 pm

I would clean my kitchen tile floors. They are so hard to keep clean with two toddlers and a dog that tracks fine valley soil into the house. I had a steam mop that a friend gave me that I liked because it was quick and easy, but it broke. Now my floor rarely gets mopped. Steam cleaning is so easy! I’d love this!

  47. DeLinn says

    January 28, 2015 at 3:57 pm

With these boys I live with? EVERYTHING! Counters, tile floors and now the NEWLY re-tiled showers are going to need a major overhaul! Love the steam idea, girl!! Genius.

  64. Amy F. says

I would want to clean the floors in my kitchen first. I have two dogs who are constantly tracking in dirt which drives me crazy trying to keep up with the mess. I think steam moping would be able to cut my cleaning time down. It seems I am constantly mopping.

  65. Lori says

    January 29, 2015 at 12:05 pm

I’d love to use it in my bathroom – tub, shower doors, floor, etc.!!

  66. Lori R. says

    January 29, 2015 at 12:32 pm

I would try it on my glass top stove. All the spray cleaners I use leave the top streaked. I often use Mighty Boss to clean the grease off the stove but it too leaves streaks on the glass top. The only product that works without streaks is the cleaner for glass tops specifically. A steamer may be the way to go on the stove.

  67. Heather C says

    January 29, 2015 at 1:07 pm

Everything! Seriously, been wanting one for a looong time now. Thank you for the opportunity to win 🙂

  72. Carole Z. says

I would find many uses for the Home Right steam machine. The first job I would tackle is my smooth surface cooktop. It’s not dried on food that’s a problem..it’s greasy streaks.. I cover the thing in bubbles ( Dawn for instance) and rinse and rinse and rinse…in the polish stage, near the controls, streaks of what has to be grease (I take the knobs off when cleaning). I think the heat and steam might be just what I need to clean this frustrating appliance. I’d use it on my granite too of course.
