Neon has long been considered a major trend, especially in fashion. I love that it’s started making it’s way into home decor!
Now, neon and I are buddies, but for a while, that wasn’t the case. I am a neutral girl. I paint almost every room in my home white (they’re all currently white, but I’m considering going dark in one!) I like lots of wood paired against that white. I will layer color on top, but it’s more the cherry on top of my style sundae instead of the two scoops of ice cream.
To me, neon has always been the two scoops of ice cream. When you add neon to a room, I just knew it would be overwhelming.
I had to learn how to love neon in my home and I’m excited to share with you how I bridged the gap between neutral-lover to bring-on-the-neon!
Here’s how I’ve approached bringing neon into our home:
Some people will disagree with this and it’s totally personal preference! I’ve seen some amazing rooms that don’t follow this rule. But for my style and to ensure that the room isn’t overwhelming, I stick to this rule.
Neon looks best (in my opinion) with neutrals and soft colors. I love contrast and like for the neon to be the pop against the rest of the room.
I have started bringing neon into our home in small ways, but the biggest is probably my office. The office is a great example of both tips above.
The neon chair was the last thing I added to this room.
The walls were already white: my standard formula. I made the faux marble waterfall desk and the soft blue tie-dye curtains. I added in the neutral rug and pour. I loved how it was coming together, but it needed something. It needed a pop, just a bit of quirk. It needed neon.
The chair is the only thing in the room. It gives one single pop, which is really enough with neon.
Everything else in the room is very neutral and soft, so the neon is a surprise and really stands out, while still complimenting the rest of the room.
This last point may not be relevant to all. There are so many amazing neon products that you can buy now for your home. But so far, all of the items I’ve brought into my home I’ve painted neon.
I love vintage items, which usually are not neon. Also, since neon and bright colors aren’t my go-to, I usually realize when a room is almost complete (like the office) that it needs a pop. I already had the chair and most likely, would’ve painted it something calmer, but neon it was.
You can purchase this paint in all colors here.
Y’all, I tried several neon paints and this one is awesome. So far, I’ve used the yellow on the office chair and the pink on this little deer in my jewelry area.
The color is great.
It dramatically changed my vintage wire office chair.

So there’s my journey from a neutral-only girl to someone who embraces the neon trend in her own way! I’ve fallen in love with neon now that I’ve defined ways I love to use it. It can brighten a room like nothing else.
Now go paint something neon!
Hi! I love the green against the neutrals. Plus, it goes great with the plant leaves as the sun shines through it. In case you didn’t know, they make a neon pothos plant. I found mine at my local nursery. You can see it in my post about my dining room a few pics down… http://thebrickbungalow.blogspot.com/2013/03/home-tour-dining-room.html
You make it look so good and so neutral, if that even makes sense!!
I have always been and will always be on team neon! I love it so much…in small doses and large. With both neutrals and other colors. Love the chair makeover. It was totally meant to be neon!
