When people ask me what I “do,” I giggle on the inside. Back when I lived in Washington, DC, that was the question you were asked anytime you went anywhere. Never have I been anywhere where what you do is so much of who you are.
These days, the answer to that question is no longer “Congressional legislative aide and grad student.” Who knew that would be the easy time in my life? Now, I wear so many different hats that I need my very own hat rack.
The Mommy Hat – My Mommy Hat is just a baseball cap I can throw on in the mornings over my crazy hair when we are running late for preschool. I proverbially had it on this morning when we overslept, didn’t have time to make my coffee and diffused a meltdown over having to wear a jacket to school (oh, the horrors!).
Don’t get me wrong – the Mommy Hat comes out for fun things, too. It was on while my friend took Emma’s two month photos and I got to try to make my chunky girl smile.
Thanks to Milestone Months for the adorable onesie!
It was also on during the preschool Halloween party, as I watched my mustache-less Super Mario ham it up for the camera and thank all of the parents who were taking pictures. No, really – he was saying, “Thank you! Thank you so much!” I guess he thought we were paparazzi?
The Mommy hat was also on when we got home from the party and had to hide the bags of candy and treats he’d been given. Sigh. Is it just me, or do you dread this time of year, too?
The Crafty Hat – My Crafty Hat is a pink baseball cap that’s splattered with paint and primer. You’ve seen it before.
Sadly, the Crafty Hat hasn’t gotten much use as of late. I did have a fabulously adorable wreath that I was going to make and show you for Halloween. Well, it’s been sitting half-way finished for weeks now, so I’m going to have to turn it into a Thanksgiving wreath…but, don’t hold me to that as it probably won’t be finished then either. I miss wearing my Crafty Hat, and I hope that I can don it again very soon.
The Maid Hat – My Maid Hat is actually a bandanna slung over my hair to keep it out of my eyes. As of late, the Maid Hat gets absolutely no wear. It’s collecting dust itself on my hat rack.
The Stylish Hat – My Stylish Hat has sparkly and fabulous. It’s actually been getting a lot of wear as I ease myself back into my Stella & Dot business. I’m having a great time helping local gals get a jump start on their holiday shopping and getting their “mojo” back. Mommies deserve to look great without a lot of effort, too!
If you or a loved one is fighting or has won the battle with breast cancer, I encourage you to check out our Stella & Dot Pink Boutique. Through the end of this month, Stella & Dot is donating 20% of all items purchased through the Pink Boutique to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I love that, so I have decided to match their donation. I really cherish the charm necklace I created for myself (mine has a breast cancer awareness ribbon charm, a “hope” charm, and a rose quartz charm), and I would love for you to think about creating one so that 40% of that purchase would go towards breast cancer research. I’m all about shopping for a cause!
The Wife Hat – My Wife Hat is the gorgeous veil I wore on my wedding day. Even though we’ve been only been married about 7 years, it seems like ages ago. In that short span of time, we’ve seen 2 kids, 2 dogs and 2 houses come into our lives. We better not keep expanding that quickly!
At any rate, my wife hat got a much needed dust off earlier this week as we celebrated my husbands birthday. I finally bought him the GPS he’s been wanting forever…and managed to get the exact brand and model he’s been after. Go me! I’m totally proud of myself for that one, and he’s been spending tons of time playing with his new toy.
The Me Hat – My Me Hat is the wide brimmed straw hat I wear when I’m laying on the beach. Needless to say, I haven’t worn it recently. Perhaps I’ll wear it tonight in a bubble bath with a glass of wine. Just thinking about it makes me happy.
I think my hat rack is running out of hooks! How many hats do you wear?
Greeting Lindsay! While surfing around trying to find some photos of the PB french script lamps and somehow I came across your blog.
Your little ones are too adorable! (My son loved Mario when he was younger! )
I just posted a story about my (so not pc) Boogeyman incident with my (then) 4yrs old son. He’s older now and is at Berkeley studying PoliSci. ha! how ironic..no?!
Loved your post! lol @ the wreath dilemma.
You newest follower,
Tina
Hmm… I would have to remove Mom Hat – not there yet! But add in a Boss and Employee Hat – cause they are such different little animals. (My me hat would just like to be lazy today but my crafty hat is just determined that we get some stuff done! ) Great post! 🙂
I love this post Lindsey! After 15 years in the corporate world, I left to care for my terminally ill Dad and chronically ill Mom. I also started my little antiques business for some side income. I used to be so proud to tell people I was the HR Manager for a Fortune 500 retailer. Now, when people ask, I hesitate for a minute, because it’s likely they won’t “get” it. But, then I think to myself “it’s all good, I’m doing what I love and what I’m passionate about”. I look forward to maybe someday adding a mommy hat to my rack if it is meant to be!!
Oh my goodness how true those all are! 🙂 You are quite the busy woman, I hope you get to wear your me hat soon 🙂
I actually wish I wore real hats… I feel so silly when I put one on my head… yet I LOVE them!! 😉 issues… I need therapy! ha ha!
Perfect post… I feel much like a mad hatter lately… which means I need to pull out the big straw hat and go the beach soon! =) ha ha!
You were a Hill staffer!?? I had no idea! I have been following your blog forever and had no idea. I live in Alexandria and work on the Hill. I do budget/finance policy for a senator from oklahoma. What did you do while you were here? And yea, you’re right, “what do you do?” is THE question everyone around here asks. It gets old! 🙂 But anyway, love your site and I now I love it even more!! I am scared for the day I leave the Hill-my answer to what do you do will change too. I’m going to have to get used to that. but not yet I guess.
As a mother of four under the age of seven, I am a hat fanatic. I too had a past full of glorious experiences but now those hats hang in the trophy case and my new hats are worn and wise. I am all the better for them. Great post.
Thanks Lindsay for the Milestone Months link! Little Emma looks adorable 🙂 We all have so many hats we’re wearing… sometimes it’s hard to keep them straight. This is a great post.. reminding us to not let those “Me” hats collect dust.
I wanted to let you know that Amy Jo and I have a sale on the onesies for the holidays- 20% off today for Cyber Monday and discounts to be announced all through Dec. I posted a blog about the onesies and how they came to be. If you have time check it out. 🙂
