Buying in Bulk {and a 3M Filtrete Prize Pack Giveaway!}

Earlier in the week, I talked about some ways to save money when you are shopping in a home improvement store.  One of those tips was that you should buy in bulk when it’s something that you use often.

One of the items that I like to always have on hand is filters for our HVAC system.  We need 3 different sized filters (WHY, HOME BUILDERS? WHY?), so keeping a supply on hand makes it look like we are ready to open our own filter store.

We like to keep them on hand for several reasons.  First, because their mere existence is a reminder that we need to change our filters.  Each time I open our coat closet (aka junk closet) they almost fall on top of me.  It’s like they are each vying to be cast in The Replacements.  We try to remember to replace them every 3 months so that the air quality in our home isn’t filled with things like allergens, pet dander and cooking odors.

Nancy Drew and the Case of the Marbled Light Bulb

When we moved into our home over five years ago, we found that we could barely see in our master bedroom closet.  The light was so dim that I had to bring garments out of the closet to tell if they were navy or black.  One day, I may have even put on two different shoes.  And don’t even get me started on how it effected my color blind husband.

The first thing that would pop into most people’s heads would be to replace the light fixtures so that we could use a higher wattage of bulbs, right?  Yeah, we thought that too.  We even bought several can lights that Tom was going to install, but it never happened.  Ahem.  ::sideways glance at Tom::

Well, one of the bulbs in those old fixtures finally burned out a few weeks ago.  When I opened the fixture to remove the bulb that had burned out, I found that it looked like this:

What in the world?  This was originally a soft white bulb, but now it looks marbled.
