Easing into Fall Decorating

In Austin, the official start to Fall is the moment our beloved Texas Longhorns take the football field. After 69 days of 100+ degrees this summer ( a new record! Go Austin!), I’m certainly ready for some cooler temps.

In order to usher in the new season, even when it is still in the upper 90s, I’ve decided to take on my Fall decorating baby step by baby step. I’m not too big into decorating for holidays (other than Christmas) and the seasons, but I’ve decided to at least try to give the vibe that it isn’t so hot here all the time. I haven’t done any Fall decorating on the inside, but that will be coming soon.

Inspired by the Nester’s new wreath, I created a Fall wreath for our front door by just sticking the wired elements into a grapevine wreath and using no hot glue at all. I know – it was hard to ignore my precious glue gun, but I like the idea of being able to easily change out the pieces when I want to freshen my wreath.

I bought the wreaths (I wired a 14 inch wreath and an 18 inch wreath together), the floral/greenery stems, and large ‘B’ at Hobby Lobby. Everything was 1/2 off and I’ll be able to reuse it all again.

The ‘B’ isn’t actually wood, but instead, it’s heavy pressed cardboard. For $1.99, I didn’t care that it wasn’t wood since our front door is shielded from the elements by our covered porch. I used a little craft paint to paint it a creamy white and I was good to go.

Oh, and ‘B’ is the first initial of my last name. I’m always surprised when people ask me why I have ‘B’ stuff since my name is Lindsay. I think the rest of my family would feel left out if I just put an ‘L’ on everything.

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have heard me say that I was running by Home Depot to pick up some of their $1.25 mums (I believe the sale runs through today, so get over there!). I added them to the planter at our front door.

Now, our front door now looks like it’s time to usher in the cooler Fall weather, even if we are still wearing shorts.

    I saw this post on the Nesting Place for the wreath with the letter in the middle – and I love yours as well!!! I've never wantd to be married more in my life than I do right now [ok, that's a lie but still – I doubt 2 letters would look as fetching as this does!] I like that it looks ready for fall but come Christmas with a few different additions I think you're ready for the entire holiday season!! Great work!

    How fun! 🙂 I always get overwhelmed when I see all of the selections in the faux floral section at JoAnn's, Michaels, etc. Your wreath is gorgeous. 🙂 If I knew I wouldn't have to take both girls out with me, I'd head out to get some of those mums today, but they wore me out at Target this morning. :s

    You can be sure I got myself some of those mums! The wreath is beautiful, Lindsay, a very proper way to convey to others that, yes, it is Texas. But we fully respect the changing of the seasons. Hey, we went to college with those Sooners here in this house. So we may be yelling in opposite directions!

    I always had such a hard time decorating for the seasons all the years we lived in Austin…except for Christmas.

    Darn, wish I had known you when we lived there! We're in CO now, hit a 'high' of 88 today so yeah, I turned on the A/C but can't wait to turn it off again and turn on the house fan. Yeah, I know.

    Awesome job!! We were at a fall festival today and they were selling wreaths not near as pretty as yours for $50 bucks and up! Love the addition of the "B" as well!! Thanks for the inspiration.

    I'm absolutely loving this! Since I just got remarried a year and a half ago, I have become obsessed with monograms. Now I'm thinking I will totally have to try this out. You did a fantastic job.

    I just bought a new wreath last week and have not hung it yet. I will add a giant "H" to it and hang it the Friday after Thanksgiving. Loving it!

    Hi Lindsey,

    Just saw your wreath on pinterest – beautiful. I have a question. My front door is like yours and I was wondering how you actually have it hanging on the door. I used to hang wreaths with one of those over the door hooks but now with my new door can’t. I love how this wreath looks on the door. Help?

      Hi Mary-

      I just loop some ribbon around the wreath and meet the ends at the top. With a tiny finishing nail, I nail it to the very top of my door (not the front face of the door, but the very top). I have one little nail hole that I use over and over.

    Hi Lindsay, I found your blog a few months ago and I am hooked. I created my own version of your feathery fall wreath using autumnal colors and a yellow “F” last weekend. I took a pic and posted on my Facebook page. I have 15 likes so far! Your tutorial broke down each step clearly and the result was amazing. I think my final project is nicer than any of the wreaths I saw displayed in my local craft store…and, it’s personalized! Thanks Lindsay!!!
