Color Your World

by Lindsay Ballard on June 23, 2011 17 Comments

I hear a lot of people say that they shy away from color because it scares them.  I understand that concern.  No one wants their living room to look like a Mexican restaurant or Barney’s sound stage.

Color doesn’t have to be scary.  Start by picking one bold piece to paint, and you’ll see how much fun it can be.  You can select any color of the rainbow.

If you had zero inhibitions, what color would you paint a fun piece of furniture?  What are you waiting for?

Apple green! And my only inhibition is that I already have a long list of projects and no time to do them! Perhaps next fall when all the kids are back in school…. Love the furniture pics you posted.

I love all these photos. The pink-on-pink really caught my attention. Also, the blue walls and green desk. … The color combos are brilliant! I need to keep this in my brain for when I start painting furniture.

Love the red piece! I spotted an oops can of paint in Lowe’s and bought it to paint a piece I have on my back patio – it’s a medium aqua color and I LOVE it!

The “mexican restaurant” comment makes me laugh. Our livingroom is a terracotta colour, the dining room yellow with terracotta tile, and the kitchen yellow with dark green cupboards and terracotta tile. Let me mention here that the house came this way. A few months ago I told my husband, “I want to change the colours. I’m getting tired of this ……” and he filled in, “mexican restaurant?” So very true!

I don’t think we can afford to change the tile or the cupboards, but the paint is going to happen!

A great post. Thank you for the inspiration. I usually do patterned painted finishes on the pieces that I sell but I would like a bit more of this “quieter” :0 paint treatment in my home.
Of course I love your images.

Great post! I love color. I am getting ready to paint a couple pieces and would love to do the same yellow as the dresser in your post. Any idea what color it is or who I might ask? Thanks!

The blue banquette table is my favorite! And where did those pillows come from to match? Any clues? Thank you for your inspiration!
