How to Remove Paint Odors with Essential Oils

After we moved my daughter’s gorgeous, handmade dresser to her room, I noticed that it smelled.  The odor of the finishing products we used (both oil-based paint and wood stain) was pretty strong.  It wasn’t strong enough to keep us from using the dresser, but strong enough that I smelled it whenever I walked into the room.  I decided that I needed to figure out how to remove paint odors so that Emma’s room wouldn’t be so overpowering.

Then, my mind went to something new and bright and shiny, and I promptly forgot what I needed to figure out.  Story of my life!

A few weeks later, my friend Myra posted on Facebook that she painted her boys’ bedroom with low VOC paint and it still smelled bad.  To get rid of the paint smell, she opened the bedroom window and added a Young Living essential oil blend, called Purification, to the diffuser in their room with the door closed.  At the end of the day, the paint smell was completely gone – not masked by another smell, but G.O.N.E.

Wait, what?  There’s a magic oil that makes paint odors go away?

Well, in a word, yes.  Myra turned me on to the different properties of essential oils this past summer when we were roommates at the Haven blogger conference.  I don’t claim to understand how or why they work, but different ones help with my migraines, clear up congestion and help me sleep more soundly.  I like to put mine in a diffuser, which is a little device that you can use to disperse the oils into a room as a fine mist.

I did have the Purification on hand (it was in the Premium Starter Kit set of oils I bought), so I thought I would give it a shot in Emma’s room.  I had used it previously when I accidentally left a rag I had used to clean up spilled milk in the laundry room for a few days with the door shut.  Yeah, that was gross, and the smell didn’t go away even when I washed the rag.  I ran my diffuser with Purification in the laundry room for a few hours and the disgusting smell was completely gone.

So in Emma’s room, I filled he diffuser with tap water and put 4 drops of Young Living’s Purification in the water.  I turned it on, shut the door and opened a window.  I let it run until the diffuser ran out of water and turned itself off, which is about 4 hours.  I could still faintly smell the paint odor, so the next day I ran the diffuser again but left the window closed.

Now, the paint smell is gone.  And once it didn’t smell like Purification (which smells delightful, by the way) in her room anymore, I couldn’t smell the paint.  It’s almost like it vanished into thin air!  Weird, right?  I know that it’s seriously hard to believe, but it’s true.  I’m wondering if this will work for removing smells from thrift store furniture.  I’ll have to try it the next time I bring a new/old treasure home!

I have four different diffusers – two from Young Living and two like the one pictured above that came from Amazon.  I keep one in each of our bedrooms and one in our living room/kitchen area.

I choose use Young Living oils because of the Seed to Seal promise.  These products are genuine and without synthetics.  The company carefully monitors every aspect of essential oil production – literally from the each plant seed to each bottle’s seal – so that it can produce essential oils with unmatched purity.  I feel confident using them for myself and my family.  There are absolutely other oils on the market, including some that you can buy for much cheaper.  However, from what I’ve found doing my own research, Young Living essential oils are the only that I personally feel comfortable using.

If you would like more information on Young Living essential oils and how they can help your family with their wellness goals, please reach out to me at Lindsay@MakelyHome.com.  I’m always happy to answer questions.  Or if you are ready to get started using Young Living essential oils in your home, you can sign up here.

If you sign up as a Young Living Member, you can order a Premium Starter Kit, which is the perfect way to get started using oils.  If you become a Young Living member (you can’t order the kit by signing up as a retail customer) and place an order for a Premium Starter Kit through this link, I will send you a personal gift to help you get started with your essential oils.  I am certain that you will be pleased to have it, as I use mine nearly daily!  ?

Do you use essential oils?  How do you use them?

This is awesome!! Thanks for sharing! I do have a quick question on the use of the diffuser -do you notice an oily residue on your furniture and stuff in the room when using the diffuser? Trying to convince hubby to use this in our home, but he’s really concerned about that happening.

if you turn on your YL diffuser to the setting you want and hold the button in for a few seconds the nightlight portion will turn off:)

I think that’s just the new style diffusers, right? The old YL ones didn’t have that option. 🙁

Oh no!! It’s true – a little goes a LONG way! I would just open the windows and turn a fan on every chance you get in that room. I hope it’s better by now!

i can conform diffuser with essential oil works like a charm. i had used a particular brand which stated odourless, but i can still smell something for weeks and had been feeling giddy, there was a few times after waking up in the morning, i could could even stand straight right away. I then tried using air purifier with ioniser but with no help at all. when i started using diffuser i think mix with lavendar oil or some other oils(could not remember), the smell was amost gone within just one day and i no longer feel giddy anymore. Today i just repainted my house but i forgot to buy the seential oil, desperately need to get some tomoorow.
