We had a very traumatic event in our house this past weekend.
Our perfectly placed living room was infected with a hideous rocking recliner. :GASP:
Before my son was born, we bought an extremely comfy but extremely ugly rocking recliner from La-Z-Boy. Really, guys, it’s ugly. I feel like it looks like it’s going to come to live and eat my head. Weird, huh?
Anyway, said recliner was a god-send during Zack’s first year. I’m pretty sure that every picture of me during that time in his life was taken of me sitting in that chair. Sometimes, you just have to choose function over beauty. For the past 3 1/2 years, the recliner has been cleverly hidden in Zack’s playroom, but now that it’s almost baby time, it needed to come back downstairs.
My husband was scarred by it’s addition to our living room. I must have had him move every single piece of furniture in the room around 3 or 4 times before we settled on placement. Now that it’s here, I pretty much haven’t gotten out of it. Looks like it will be another year of photos in the La-Z-Boy!
I’m sure you want to see pictures, but since my house looks like a 4-year old tornado blew through here. I’m too lazy in my La-Z-Boy to get up and pick up toys. I can’t use the “I’m pregnant and I can’t clean” excuse for much longer, so I’m going to use it here just because I can.
Do you have a hideous piece of furniture that you adore?
My lounges that we bought just after our first baby was born used to be adored but are now hideous! Never buy cream faux suede couches when children will be in the house! ARGH the stains
Our Lazy-Boy has been gone for a long time, but it was indeed a godsend during all those baby years. Especially those nights with a sick one who needs to be held upright and mom needs sleep. My inlaws have a gorgeous leather wingback with nailhead trim that is a Lazy Boy. Who knew! I don’t they existed when we bought ours.
Sometimes you just can’t beat a comfy chair. My hubby had a big recliner like that (that was hunter green leather – ick!) but he loved it because he won it at a basketball game! I tolerated it due to the sentimental natural – and at least we had a good story to explain its presence in our home. Evidently – that sentiment was not shared by my male cat, who made it his own personal litterbox. Needless to say – we no longer have that chair….
I had the same thing. A temporary rocker recliner to get through the first months with babies. Function rules decorating when baby arrives!
I inherited a great wingback chair from my grandmother. The only problem is that its upholstered in a dusty rose fabric. A pretty fabric, but it clashes BIG time with my red and gold living room!!
My in-laws gave us a monster of a pull-pull out couch when we got married five years ago. We have new furniture in our living room since then, but this couch is just so comfy for afternoon naps, etc. It’s pale blue with ugly little pink flowers. So Nasty and old, but so comfy!
I have to tell you, I think (and this would shock a lot of people that know me) that Lazy Boys are SOOO well made for the price. Do you know that they have really good looking, well made wing backs that recline AND that they’ll upholster in nearly anything under the sun, too? I’ve had my eye on a pair forever now, I just haven’t had the right space.

Uh, yeah…..I have TWO hideous recliners in my living room! But, I gotta have comfort over design, right?
That is a sweet story about your recliner.
I have a horrible pink and brown chair that I bought at a garage sale because I feel in love with it. It goes with NOTHING in the house at all.
Did I mention it has monkeys on it??
But I really love it.
OMG! Let me just say that I’m not at home right now, but as soon as I get back there I’m going to check my living room and make sure my TWO identical chairs are still there, lol.
Ours are ancient but still comfortable. When I put up my footrest the dog jump ups and snuggles with me. I nap in the chair. Wouldn’t trade them for anything – except another comfy chair.
Oh, hon, I feel your pain!! My youngest has a HIDEOUS cat-barf-orange colored chair in her room. My mom wouldn’t let me get married 9 years ago unless I took it, and so it was relegated to Michaela Byrd’s room. I covered it with a cheap WM slip cover, so you can’t see the cat-barf-orange color. But I know it’s there. 😉 Anyways, I spent many a night feeding her in that chair, grateful for its comfort.
I bought a 1975 Lazy Boy on Craig’s list. It is just as comfy as the modern ones—but not such an eye-sore. They have wood arms and stuff, so it was easy to recover. Now it’s gorgeous and so, so comfortable. My friends fight over it every time we have a girl’s night.

Hi Lindsay! I’m a new blogger absolutely LOVING your site! Come check out my first few before/after posts when you get a chance 🙂 We used to have a hideous blue recliner that my husband just refused to give up. While I wasn’t too keen on the dingy blue, the recliner was pretty comfortable… so I searched high and low and, luckily, Target (my fav!) came through. Check out this recliner slip cover- it’s offered in a few shades: http://www.target.com/Stretch-Rib-Recliner-Slipcover-Beach/dp/B000EFFC7C/ref=sc_qi_detailbutton. I love love LOVE ours- it fits perfectly, as its stretchy- and it currently has a home in front of the TV in our basement. And of course you can’t beat the Target price. Anyways, I thought that this may be a handy tip for you!

I think I own that same chair. My son was a fussy baby so my parents bought me the most comfy chair we could find to rock him in when he fussed during the night. I spent a lot of nights sleeping in that chair rocking my little guy until he fell asleep. Though it is not the most stylish chair in my home I have a hard time parting with it because of all of the memories of rocking my son. My chair looks identical to yours so I got a kick out of seeing here.
I’m not even kidding- I just rearranged my living room this morning to make my rocking armchair fit for when our baby comes! I agree- sometimes your home fashion has to be sacrificed!
This cracks me up. You know we are still in our race to have our babies. Tax returns this year bought us a recliner instead of a dumb glider, to rock our new little one in. It’s green microfiber, cute, but really stiff! I am a whopping 5 foot 1 so my feet barely reach the ground and I can barely rock in it! My husband’s parents got new furniture we adopted an old (not pretty) recliner of theirs. I moved the pretty one in our room for night nursing, and the ugly one is out infront of the tv…..yeap. Did you know I have a craft blog too? hammyscrafts.blogspot.com
same exact situation here! Sitting in a very comfy and pretty ugly recliner now! It’s awesome for feeding and rocking the baby, but terrible to look at! Whatcha gonna do? right?
I bought an overstuffed chair – hey it was the 90’s – that should be gone! My husband and dog love it. I’ve been outnumbered. It stays 🙁
I bought the same exact chair in 2000 for my son’s birth. I now have it in my living room–same color and everything. It’s my favorite chair, partially because I am short and I can touch the ground comfortably.
When I first met my hubs he had his bachelor pad. While the furniture wasn’t the best looking it was so comfy. We now have it upstairs in the game room aka Man Cave where it sits in all it’s ugly glory.
One word: SLIPCOVER! =) I think that model can come apart–top/back & chair/arms. If you slipcover individually, you can still recline… and you can make it loose around the skirt so the foot rest can still recline/stick out, too! Best of luck with your big ugly scary chair! =)

I have a very similar hideous chair but man is it comfy!
I wish I could count the hours of sleeping and nursing I’ve done in our chair…
We have one of those eye-sore chairs too! Ours, however, is this awful dark green (my husband had it before I came along!!) It was the PERFECT place to sit with our babies. The arms are placed perfectly and they are nice and soft. In fact, I slept every night in it with our first daughter for the first 4 months of her life! Cheers to the ugly furniture we love!!
I am now shopping for a Laz-z-Boy. I need to put my feet up after work. But I am resistant to buying the ugly thing. It is so comfy though. Im still looking for the perfect one that is oh so comfy and a little good looking for the living room………
