DIY Hardware Store Advent Calendar

Last week Lindsay posted this fabulous DIY Advent Calendar.  I’m drooling over the Silhouette accents…(man I need to get me one of those).

Without having seen hers first I was busily putting together my own version playing off a project I did three years ago. Back then I used an old frame and some peg boards and hooks from the hardware store to make…

…a hanging place for my jewelry.

Wanting to do something similar I made my way to Home Depot.

They have a whole display where they sell boards, pre-painted chalkboards, dry erase boards, peg boards, etc. sized at 2 x 4 all under $10.00. Makes it SO easy to transport home and work with for smaller projects. They will even cut it down to the size you need for free…love that!


I sprayed my frame with gold spray paint…

Then secured it to the frame using some picture hanging type hooks.

For the “calendar part” I used colored paper, smaller hardware paper bags, and office clips (Office Max).

I found this cool stamp at an antique store but you could print the date on paper with your computer or just hand write the date on your paper.

Then I clipped and hooked the bags on the board.

I love that this project isn’t holiday specific.

When Christmas is over I could use it to organize whatever else I need to.

Let the count down begin!  My boys are SOOO excited to see what’s in each bag!

DIY Christmas Tree Repurposed Jar Snow Globes

As a decorating and DIY blogger, I try to keep my ideas fresh.  Even if I put something particularly trendy in my home, I try to give it my own little Lindsay spin.

But sometimes, I see something that I love so much that I don’t care that it’s been done a million times.  For instance, take these adorable mason jar snow globes from Anthropologie.

Oh, they are just so dang cute!  And start at $28 a piece for the small ones.  And have been knocked off on dozens of blogs over the last few years.

I decided that this was the year that I was going to have my own repurposed jar snow globes.  I started collecting jars (and bought a few more), knowing that I couldn’t just do one or two.  So, I made 21.  I always have a hard time knowing when to stop.

I bought a package of 21 different sized  bottle brush Christmas trees from Home Depot for just $7 (it was with the snow village stuff).  They have these trees at Dollar Tree, too, but the Home Depot package was a better deal.  I spray painted the lids of the jars silver and hot glued one tree inside each jar.  Zack and Emma helped me add Epsom Salt in some jars and fake, plastic snow in others.

I tied red and white twine (from the gift wrap/party department at Target) around the top of each jar.  I also printed and used my Silhouette to cut gift tags to put on a few of them.  If you have a Silhouette machine and would like to use these tags I designed, you can download the .studio file here (it will download immediately).

I displayed all 21 jars on my antique sideboard and stuck some white Christmas lights behind them.  I now have my own little Winter Wonderland that doesn’t have to come down as soon as Christmas is over – I think they’ll make it through January!

I kind of like them right side up instead of upside down like Anthropologie features them.
