The Mike Holmes Challenge

by Lindsay Ballard on August 14, 2013 7 Comments

Back before I was a DIYer, I was a huge fan of a show on HGTV called Holmes on Holmes. The host was Mike Holmes, a straight-shooting, overall-wearing contractor from Canada who helped homeowners fix home renovation mistakes made by shady contractors. I loved seeing the crazy things the bad contractors would do, but it was awesome to see Mike come in and rescue homeowners from really dangerous situations in their homes.

Throughout the last ten or so years, Mike has had several different shows across several different networks, including his current show Make It Right.  He always stresses safety and easy maintenance issues to the homeowners he’s working with, and he’s recently taken that message to consumer products. Working with the Filtrete Brand from 3M, Mike has put out a list of his top summer maintenance tips for homeowners.  Because I also work with the Filtrete Brand as a Blogger Ambassador (which makes Mike and I basically co-workers, right?), I decided to put out some of my own tips, too.

I mean, shouldn’t I be his co-host on the next show?  I could be his funny but eager assistant…and this Texas girl can wear overalls like the best of them, right?  I’m expecting a call from his producers shortly. In all seriousness, the Filtrete Brand Micro Allergen Reduction Filters have been great for my family this summer.  The kids and I are seasonal allergy sufferers, and the dry Austin conditions coupled with the African dust cloud (Seriously.  That’s a thing.) that’s plagued our area this summer has meant lots of sore throats, coughing and doses of Claritin.  I can’t help but think that our air conditioning filters are helping to make our indoor air quality a little bit better and help our HVAC system work more efficiently in our 108 degree days.  The filters do this by capturing dust, pollen and lint from the air passing through them.

I’m glad that Mike loves the Filtrete Brand filters, too.  He recommends them, and that makes me think that I know what I’m doing. He’s a know-it-all (in a good way) and a talented renovation expert, so I like that we agree on our favorite air filters. But, I can balance a Filtrete Brand filter on my head.  Can Mike do that?

Let’s ask him, shall we?  Tweet Mike Holmes by clicking THIS link or by copying and pasting the following message as your Twitter status:

Hey Mike! U r talented, but r u THIS talented? Tweet a pic & prove it! @Make_It_Right #FiltreteFilters @MakelyHome http://bit.ly/16kigtc

Maybe (hopefully!) Mike will tweet us back with a photo of him balancing a Filtrete filter on his head. Unless, of course, he can’t do it. Did you hear that Mike?  The gauntlet (or rather the air filter) has been thrown.

September 2013 Update:  So, did Mike Holmes respond to our ridiculous twittering?  He sure did!

It’s no picture of him with a filter on his head, but it’s pretty cool that I got a personal tweet from him.  Thanks to everyone who tweeted to Mike!

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post for Filtrete. I am proud to work with 3M and will be sharing more home maintenance information from 3M Filtrete in future posts. I was given key messages to share, but all the words and thoughts are my own.  I have been compensated for my time and for this post.

You should TOTALLY be his co-host! It would soften him up a little and only add MORE EXPERTISE! This is a win-win basically.

I’ll be waiting anxiously to see Mindsay (see what I did there? Mike+Lindsay)

We Canadlians aren’t usually much for heroes but we make an exception in Mike Holmes’ case…isn’t he fabulous..?
I’m a renter, and I still pick up great things to know from him (not that most landlords will be listening)…
    Mike Holmes rocks!
